About this deal

British Colonel T. E. Lawrence (better known as Lawrence of Arabia) was probably the best-known Western wearer of the keffiyeh and agal during his involvement in the Arab Revolt in World War I. This image of Lawrence was later popularized by the film epic about him, Lawrence of Arabia, in which he was played by Peter O'Toole. The General Manager of the factory said they have produced more than 250 styles of keffiyeh, more than 150,000 keffiyehs each year. The factory was established in 1961, and used to operate more than 15 machines; today, after the import of cheaper keffiyehs produced in China started competing in the local markets, only 4 machines operate in the factory employing 15-25 workers. During the Intifada in 1987 and again during the Second Intifada in 2000, people in Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Yemen wore the scarf to show solidarity for Palestinians against the Israeli occupation. Fast fashion enters the picture Beyond its significance in the Middle East, the Keffiyeh has gained international recognition as a symbol of solidarity and resistance. Its adoption by activists and individuals around the world has transformed it into a global emblem of support for the Palestinian cause and the broader fight against oppression. Finding the Balance: The key lies in striking a balance. If one chooses to wear the Keffiyeh, it's crucial to understand its significance and history. It's not just about wearing a piece of fabric but about carrying a narrative, a history, and a symbol of resistance. Engaging in conversations, educating oneself, and being open to understanding different perspectives can pave the way for a more inclusive and respectful global community.

in their fight against genocide. This is not about apartheid it is merely a systematic destruction of a wonderful and warm people whose land was wrested from them.

Fellow Palestinian artist Mohammed Assaf won the Arab Idol talent show in 2013 with his song in praise of the garment, Ali al-Kuffiyeh, or Raise your Keffiyeh, which became a Palestinian anthem. More recently, Palestinian singer Muhannad Khalaf’s Filisteen, Taj Ala-Raas or Palestine, Crown on the Head, features dancers wearing the keffiyeh and performing the traditional debka dance. Its origins are open to speculation," Anu Lingala, author of A Socio-political History of the Keffiyeh, tells Middle East Eye. "Until very recently, these types of designed objects were not taken seriously as subjects of academic research. The exception was for designed objects that were associated with elite status and wealth, whereas the keffiyeh was traditionally associated with working classes." Shorthand for the struggle Do unto others , As you would want them to do for you. This is the single most important guideline and easily done. If we introduce new designs, colors and patterns to our handicrafts, do we render them as foreign? Are they no longer Palestinian when we move away from the traditional? Is there no room for Palestinian artists and designers to develop and evolve their artistry? What is the keffiyeh made from?

Moving forward in history, the keffiya as a head covering was adopted by peasants who wore it while they were working on the land to protect them from the sun, and sand, as well to wipe their faces from the sweat, and in winter to protect them from the rain and cold. Of course, the impact of Covid-19 could not have been foreseen when the project was first conceived, but this prompted Musallam to return to the concept. Now living in exile in Canada, where he received refugee status in 2018, Musallam oversaw from afar the production of hundreds of masks by Abu Alaa Ghaben in Gaza City. The facemask has become the icon of the Covid-19 pandemic, and textile artisans around the world have turned their skills to the mass-production of masks, especially when there has been a shortage of medical PPE. The keffiyeh masks are worn for safety but also as an act of solidarity – the perfect symbol for pro-Palestinian protests in the age of Covid. We see that many artists around the world have put on a keffiyeh in music videos and movies, but it's important that you understand the meaning, and inform your friends and family about the symbolism. Cultural Appropriation: On the flip side, cultural appropriation is when elements of one culture are borrowed, often superficially, by another culture, particularly when the adopting culture has historically oppressed or colonized the original culture. Critics argue that when the Keffiyeh is worn as a mere fashion statement, devoid of its historical and political significance, it dilutes its value and can even be seen as disrespectful.

Saudis and Jordanians wear a red-and-white chequered shemagh, said to have been influenced by the British. There was widespread sympathy with the anti-colonial and anti-imperialist struggles in the developing world. The keffiyeh began to represent Palestine on the global stage. Yasser Arafat, former President of Palestine, famously wore it at every public appearance. His distinctive style – wrapping the keffiyeh around his head with its tail laid out on his right shoulder – symbolized a map of Palestine pre-Nakba. Rarely seen without his keffiyeh, Arafat helped popularize the garment on an international scale, particularly after the Israeli authorities banned the Palestinian flag for almost three decades (1967 – 1993).
