About this deal

This can be tricky to read in bright sunshine, although it’s considerably easier to view in other conditions, and to navigate, than the display on other wristbands I’ve used. and so light you'll easily forget you're wearing it – a real plus for a device that's designed to be worn both day and night, with only the occasional break to give your skin a rest.

The Fitbit Charge 4 uses an SpO2 pulse oximeter sensor (also found in the Charge 3, Versa, and Ionic) to better help you understand your sleeping patterns. Combined, these make it possible to leave your phone behind on walks, runs and bike rides, using the Charge 4 to track your route and pace, stream music, and make contactless payments.

The Charge 4’s touchscreen was easy to read in all but bright sunlight, and responded quickly to swipes, except when my finger was sweaty; then, it didn’t work at all. It certainly makes more sense from a general fitness standpoint than the much more arbitrary step count measure. An optical sensor on the inside of the watch measures your heart rate every second while you're working out, and every five seconds the rest of the time. Fitbit Pay works with Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, PNC, SunTrust, Wells Fargo, and many other banks and card issuers (for the full list, head here). Built-in GPS is a real game-changer for the Fitbit Charge 4, and makes it a viable alternative to dedicated fitness trackers for anyone who enjoys running, cycling and swimming for general fitness, but doesn't need the wealth of data provided by a dedicated Garmin watch or Polar.

It’s a shame this isn’t available instantly – instead, the app takes a few minutes to generate it as a PDF. This feature is convenient, and especially helpful in the age of COVID-19, allowing you to reduce your contact with potentially germ-laden point-of-sale systems. By monitoring your Active Zone Minutes, heart rate, and sleep, you'll get a range of insights and can set your own personal challenges. both watches can display smartphone notifications, and both feature NFC for making contactless purchases through Fitbit Pay (which could prove extremely handy for picking up a bottle of water during an unexpectedly hot run).

The device is water resistant to a depth of 50 meters, making it suitable for swimming, showering and sweating, but Fitbit advises taking a moment to dry the band afterwards. I think Fitbit could have tweaked the inductive button a bit more, and the heart rate sensor could always be more accurate, but those are small gripes. The communication of its journey was consistent, and the product has arrived in excellent condition,. Unfortunately, i am having a very hard time getting the f ace of my Charge 4 to open up without having to tap on it multiple times, and that isnt easy while on a treadmill going at a fast pace.

The Fitbit Charge 4 also comes with automatic run detection, so if you forget to select an activity before you start to run, the Charge 4 will start one for you after a few minutes of detecting the exercise. The Charge 4 has a plastic case with an angular design and a dark color scheme (black, dark blue, and deep purple). There are also 20 different workout options you can select from during setup on the companion Fitbit app, including specific exercises like bike riding. It has a lot of stuff to it and can send all kinds of notifications to your charge 4 thats really cool of course it uses more of your battery with the more notifications you give it.It’s a shame iPhone users are left out of that party, but Apple’s closed ecosystem prevents Fitbit from offering quick replies on iOS. During peaks and valleys in the chart above, the Forerunner was always about 1-3bpm higher than my Wahoo Tickr X chest strap, and the Charge 4 was consistently 4-6bpm too high. Indeed, over a few runs ranging from 22 minutes to 49 minutes in length, the difference in average heart rate was around 3bpm. I liked that during my run, the Charge 4 would buzz my wrist when I moved from one heart rate zone to another.
