Valkyrie shows up to save a boy called Ryan. They run through the library throwing fireballs, before getting outside to the Bentley. Skulduggery then gets in and drives them away. During the drive, Valkyrie explains some things about magic and it's people to Ryan before coming to an apartment building. She also explains that Vincent Foe and his friends need the imprint on Ryan's hand to activate a Doomsday Machine, a bomb that was initially meant to destroy the Faceless Ones. Deacon Maybury was a sorcerer who used to belong to Foe's gang, but he betrayed them and stole the key, planning to sell it on. They spend a long time fleeing from Vile, and they are joined by the White Cleaver. They run into Scapegrace, who has his head chopped off by the White Cleaver. They continue running, but Valkyrie is separated from Melancholia as monsters carry off with Valkyrie. They take her to a very tight part of the Caves, but eventually, Valkyrie manages to escape from it. Valkyrie manages to locate Melancholia again, but Lord Vile catches up with them. Realising that only way to defeat Vile, Valkyrie forces Melancholia to try and kill Valkyrie, which awakens Darquesse. Darquesse and Lord Vile engage in a huge fight, which takes them all around Ireland, including Liffey Bridge. Eventually, the two return to their former selves. Afterwards, Valkyrie and Skulduggery return to the Sanctuary to continue their investigation about Argeddion by searching through old files in the "Mystical Hall of Magical Cabinets" although they manage to find no record of him at all. They then encounter Ghastly Bespoke training with a punching bag. Stephanie and Skulduggery, aided by an immensely strong tailor named Ghastly Bespoke, and English professional swordswoman Tanith Low attempt to prevent the villain, Nefarian Serpine, from obtaining the Sceptre. Valkyrie fights Sanguine to save Guild's family. Neither win, but Sanguine promises to keep out of Ireland. When the gang return to the Hibernian, Valkyrie kisses Fletcher, and they are now a "boyfriend-girlfirend thing".They follow him into the Caves, reaching the Sceptre about the same time as Serpine and fight him. During their fight, Skulduggery manages to set Serpine on fire, which would have killed him, but he had undergone a strange procedure, making him a Zombie with an enormous healing ability. After Valkyrie acquires the brooch the next day, she and Skulduggery meet Mr. Bliss, who has agreed to help them get the Sceptre from the caves, at a Martello tower on the cliffs of Haggard. After Valkyrie has spent nine months obsessively looking for Skulduggery's skull, a vampire called Caelan manages to set up a meeting for her with a man called Thames Chabon, who apparently has the skull. It is revealed that Wreath has indeed been teaching her Necromancy during her search for the skull, and she has placed her power into a ring. When Skulduggery's family was killed, he became possessed by anger and grief and later, around 1850, [2] became the character known as Lord Vile, who then began his training at the Necromancer Temple. Scapegrace is in a state of self-pity as he has just become another commoner and has do nothing remarkable. He confesses to Thrasher and Clarabella that he's tired of his new appearance. Clarabella informs them that the Medical Wing at the Sanctuary still has their original bodies which they may be able to restore. After, Skulduggery pretends to sacrifice himself to the Accelerator but actually throws Ravel in instead, making use of a loophole in the Engineer's instructions. He teases Valkyrie about her tearful goodbye later.Skulduggery and Valkyrie, with the help of young sorcerer Adddayo Akinde, stop the Apocalypse Kings from destroying the world. Valkyrie and Skulduggery meet Mr. Bliss, who has agreed to help them get the Sceptre from the caves, at a Martello tower on the cliffs of Haggard. A few months after Serpine was defeated, Skulduggery was captured by Scaramouch Van Dreg during his search for Rancid Fines and Christophe Nocturnal, who mistakenly believed Skulduggery was looking for him. After Scaramouch gloats for a while, he realises that Skulduggery is asleep. Scaramouch wakes him up and then reveals to Skulduggery that he has a plan for world domination. Skulduggery questions what Scaramouch would do after taking the world, pointing out all the problems that would come about, and then asks how Scaramouch is planning on doing this. Scaramouch reveals he has bought a box from someone which contains a bug which will sap away all the magic from every sorcerer and give them to him. Skulduggery then asks Scaramouch to release the bug to see if it's really in there. After Scaramouch does so, Skulduggery steps on the bug, killing it. Skulduggery then says that the world needs more villains who only want to take over the world rather than destroy it and arrests Scaramouch. Peg has an emotional breakdown after Skulduggery explains to her that they don't actually love each other. Peg leaves, saddened, and Skulduggery is left to be teased by Valkyrie.

While his former appearance remains unknown, although he claims to not have been bad to look at, Skulduggery currently resides in the form of a skeleton. He can commonly be seen wearing suits made by his friend Ghastly, Skulduggery wears a hat, scarf, wig and glasses to cover up his face when in public, the wig being described as having fuzzy hair. Before the series, he got his skull stolen by some Goblins, while he was meditating. Since he has been using one he won in a poker game, however, he is reunited with it in Dark Days. It is noted that his old skull has higher cheekbones. During the fight with Serpine in the Sanctuary, Stephanie glimpsed her True name in the Book of Names but could not remember it before the Book of Names was destroyed. Skulduggery destroyed Serpine with the Scepter, breaking the Scepter's power in the process. Afterward, Skulduggery offered to take Stephanie on as his assistant and apprentice because she is a descendant of the Ancients. Stephanie decided to take the name of Valkyrie Cain. It's exciting, pacy, nicely handled and it's fun. There's nothing worthy about it, and it's all the better for that. And, I might add, it's self-contained. Landy may well revisit these characters – I sincerely hope he does – but it's a pleasingly rounded tale, which is refreshing in these days of endless open-ended books of never-ending series. As Darquesse, Valkyrie's personality undergoes a drastic, dark transformation. While still retaining her core behaviour and principals, as Darquesse is simply a darker version of her and not a separate entity, they are greatly twisted. She retains her witty, sarcastic personality, but it becomes cruel and malicious rather than playful. She relishes in causing and feeling pain and violence and is constantly seeking opponents who can actually challenge her. However, it has been noted that Darquesse is not inherently evil - simply cold, uncaring and above all curious in regards to her abilities and their limits. She is willing to ally herself with those who would usually be opposed to her, valuing self-preservation above all else.

Skulduggery, despite his bizarre appearance which he hides while in public with a disguise, is something of a dapper gentleman. He has a polite, old-fashioned way of speech and a velvety-smooth voice which enraptures Valkyrie when they first meet. As well as a powerful sorcerer, more specifically an Elemental, he is particularly enthusiastic about detecting, always searching for clues, much to Valkyrie's and Tanith's chagrin. He is also a flamboyant egotist, vocally exalting his own plans, complimenting himself, and showing off his magical abilities to Valkyrie, at one point walking on the ocean's surface after falling from a cliff. In her apartment, China tells Stephanie she sent word to the Elders. When Stephanie tells her they don’t have much time to rescue Skulduggery, China tells her that she does not want to risk another war before she is ready for it. China tells Stephanie that it was Serpine who killed Skulduggery, with his red right hand, and that Skulduggery has waited a long time for a reason to get his revenge. China uses Stephanie’s Given Name against her, stating that Gordon had mentioned her to China, and tells Stephanie to not tell anyone about what is happening. From 2007 onward, he took on Valkyrie Cain as an apprentice Detective and together they have saved the world many times – most notably when two of the three generals returned, the Faceless Ones almost broke into our dimension (after which he was trapped in another universe), Croke Park Stadium was almost destroyed, a Remnant infestation of Ireland, the Death Bringer almost killing everyone, Argeddion almost destroying the world by giving Mortals magic, the War between Sanctuaries – in which almost every Sanctuary in the world declared war on Ireland – also almost killed everyone, Valkyrie succumbed to Darquesse, making him draw together a team of soldiers, monster hunters, killers, criminals and Valkyrie's reflection to defeat a god.
