Dessen’s characters tell us who they are through their truthful and relatable internal monologues—it’s as if we’re sitting by their side as we see how they change. Hollis's gift of a tacky picture frame, featuring the words "The Best of Times," is partially what convinces Auden to take the leap and spend the summer in Colby; she realises she doesn't know what to put in the frame, because she hasn't had any experiences that fit the label.

Founded in 1998 by (now author) Kimberly Pauley as a basic stopover for people looking for information on young adult books, YABC has since evolved into one of the largest professional book recommendation sites targeted towards tween and teen readers. Once they figure out who he hooked up with, Auden ends up briefly explaining to Maggie that she has no relationship with Jake whatsoever. Auden is rarely shown around her new baby sister, Thisbe, in the movie, but she often helps care for her in the book. Maggie, Leah and Esther were good for a few smiles throughout the story, but over all they were just typical teenage girls with nothing to make them stand out.Having said that, her audience likes the familiar and these stories provide such a recognisable emotional landscape that her audience probably wants more of the same. Throughout the novel, she experiences many normal high school experiences she missed out on growing up. I didn't mind that at all, I just wanted more of the strong, all-consuming romance I've become so accustomed to.

They remind me of an ensemble cast from a TV show -- one that's perfectly chosen and flawlessly acted.

In April 2021, Deadline Hollywood announced that production had begun on a film adaptation of Sarah Dessen's 2009 novel Along for the Ride after Netflix acquired film rights.
