What I hope is that the book is taken seriously, or semi seriously, in its celebration of joy and humor and gossip. Though her own gaze might wander, Sasha comes totally undone whenever her boyfriend isn’t looking at her in a way that makes her feel truly seen — especially if Jesse is looking at someone else, like Darcy, his best friend’s girlfriend.

I loved the book’s – for lack of a better term – femme dialectics, and was wondering: What does the term “femme” mean to you today? I think the book is a rejection of the humorless, moralizing, holier than thou tone in literature that I see so much of.They do a lot of work on: how can femininity be, quote unquote, taken seriously, while not becoming masculinized? I also didn’t mind the referencing of external texts in true Iowa MFA form—if you liked this aspect of In the Dream House or Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl, this might interest you. The color it cast over Sasha’s flesh was nauseating, the nipples sprouting pathetic tufts of kelly-green fur.
