About this deal

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special. THE SCOTTISH BOTHY BIBLE – agreed Trustee response to any future queries – AGREED 25th February 2018 If you find either, or both, you are in a very upmarket bothy. In fact, you are probably in the wrong place. Any facilities are rare and probably detract from the whole experience. What about the social life? But with the information officially in the public domain I realised there was a gap in the market for a detailed guide.” Geoff the perfectionist From the bothy door enjoy stunning views of the mountain ridge extending from Corbett Sgùrr an Fhuarain (901m) to one of the most remote Munros, Sgùrr Mòr (1,003m).

If you get so upset by a situation such as this would it not be better to let the MBA know who you are, and if you have a valid point and support in the organisation come to some agreement or compromise? The MBA should publicly apologise for getting this 'bothy commercialisation' issue so badly wrong and publicly state that they will not do anything like this in the future. Are you saying that the 'arrangement' with Allan and his book is 'ethical' now given the fact that this has lead to a bothy closure. To follow your logic what would you say if Oxfam took cash from an arms company? The bothy on the island is free for all to use. Officially, it can sleep six people, however, in reality, the floor space allows for many more than that. As with all bothies, if you use this rest stop, you should leave it in better condition than you found it. As this bothy is quite remote, you’ll need to bring all of your own supplies including your sleep system, water and fuel.To say I am very pleased is an understatement. It has been such a lot of work and I have had to dedicate myself full-time to the book so it was a bit worrying financially but now I see the book in print and how many have already sold I can relax a little. It is an exciting time for me just now.” The secret of the bothies This path is mostly made up of tarmac and gravel. There are steps up to Temptation Hill viewpoint but these are relatively few in number. Although there are some steep sections on this walk, the terrain makes this walk very doable for most.

A traverse of Corbetts Beinn a’ Chumhainn (903m), and Sgòr Choinnich (929m) and Sgòr Gaibhre (955m) is another fine round. Offering adult-only accommodation, Raasay Distillery is the only place in Scotland where you can stay overnight in an operational distillery. Borodale House has been revamped to include six ensuite bedrooms, all with wonderful views. The only way to reach this bothy is by hiking or cycling- those ending the Cape Wrath Trail or the Scottish National Trail may want to spend the night once they’ve reached Cape Wrath. There is a bus and ferry service that takes tourists to Cape Wrath from Durness, and they can drop you near the bothy if requested.John Burns has written an excellent book that gives an experienced insight into what bothies and bothying is all about. I can highly recommend this book. Leaving a bothy He says: “Even the task of visiting all the bothies takes time. Most are remote and I started off by visiting them by public transport and on my bike. I didn’t have a car.

The bothy was once a hunting lodge before being abandoned. The MBA renovated the bothy in 2009, and it is now known as one of the most significant bothies in Scotland. Location: Northern Highlands - LAT/LONG 58.2281, -4.9468, NC 271 305, 11m, LR Map 15, Explorer Map 442 Unlike some of the hill walks on the neighbouring Isle of Skye, you don’t need to be an experienced scrambler to take on Dùn Caan. Although the hike is a little taxing, it is generally beginner-friendly. Even the more intense steep sections are not half as bad as they look at first sight. The hike to the bothy from Inchnadamph is known as one of the hardest sections on the Cape Wrath Trail, and strong navigation skills are needed. As you inch closer to this bothy the landscape unfolds around you. When you reach the bothy you will be rewarded with grand views of Loch Glencoul and the surrounding mountains. Inside the rather large but rather dark room, there is a sturdy table, a scattering of chairs, and a bizarre candelabra hanging from the ceiling. In 2012 the Friends of Bob Scott’s donated a stove – a very welcome addition. A steep wooden ladder leads up to an attic space. So what you have achieved there is - the MBA loses thousands of pounds but it is able to sit on the moral high ground judging and criticising all others (which appears to be a common theme) who are not as squeaky clean as themselves. Basically achieving nothing possibly less than nothing. There are many other commercial “bothies” around, but that’s not what this article is about. How many bothies in Scotland? Please leave the bothy clean and tidy with dry kindling for the next visitors. Make other visitors welcome and be considerate to other users.

An enclosed porch opens into a single room with a small sleeping platform in an alcove to the left of the entrance and a fireplace. The platform can comfortably sleep 2 people with space below it for 2 more. A wooden floor, panelling and insulation has made the bothy cosier and the whitewashed stonework on the hearth wall reflects more light.I'm failing to see your logic here. Surely each bothy closure has to be evaluated in each case? The 'rate of closure' is truly irrelevant to the fact that a bothy will now be closed due to bothy commercialisation by the Bothy Bible and arguably the MBA's role in supporting it. I say again, how many bothies must close due to the Bothy Bible before you consider it to be as big of a problem as any other reasons? 2, 4, 20..? I have, unfortunately, had to re-state the points as a few folk have deliberately tried to deflect the argument with various smokescreens from the OP, not to mention personal insults. Stop off at Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist monastery west of the bothy; the tea room is decorated in traditional Tibetan style.
