About this deal

Beauty Cookson: Main character; though timid little girl, she has a sweet personality and adores rabbits and the kids show called "Rabbit Hutch" starring Sam and his rabbit Lily.

I also feel that the character of Beauty's father was particularly well portrayed. He obviously felt a certain amount of love and affection for his daughter and wife, and wasn't only a villain. However, he was capable of some truly awful things. It was nice to see a character in a younger child's book rendered in many different shades of grey. Intergenerational Friendship: Mike develops this with Dilly and Beauty; he's decades older than Dilly and is potentially old enough to be Beauty's grandfather, though they all get along well. In particular, Mike shows Beauty how to properly use oil paints. Toxic Friend Influence: Defied by Rhona. Despite being friends with Skye, Rhona never participates in the bullying and is genuinely kind to Beauty. I used this draft to enhance my descriptions, incorporate the setting more, make the voices of the characters more distinctive, and fix grammar mistakes. I also read it aloud. Final word count: approx. 89K. Ever since I left Blue Peter I was asked if I would write a book but I didn't want to just for the sake of it as there are so many great ones already out there. I felt the Cookie books could bring something new to the mix. She is a bit of an outsider, into knowledge and science and chaos follows her around!Ridiculously Cute Critter: Lily the rabbit and Birthday, the rabbit Rhona gets Beauty for her birthday. Which makes what happened to poor Birthday all the worse. Since I already knew what the story was about, I skipped the “General Sketches” she mentions, and went straight to figuring out the plot structure and character arc, as well as interviewing my characters. Her series finishes with writing out the structure for each scene, but I did this as I wrote the first draft. I like Mrs Chen, the science teacher who is very meek mild ordinarily but can get really angry when pushed over the edge.

And then there's the "Brownies & Blondies" - where you an make the classic fudgy brownies and also branch out to turtle, marshmallow peanut butter and expresso carmel. The thing about abuse in this book is that it is subtle. The father does not think he is doing anything wrong. He thinks that Dilys and Beauty should be grateful to him for giving them so many dresses and makeup and all the luxury they live in. He thinks that they owe him to be pretty and good for him.Phonics Book Bag Readers: The World's Worst Dancer (Set 12) Matched to Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised When I tried, I realized those scenes were not tied to my MC’s arc. I had to make a choice: delete them and go full Romance or figure out how to tie the plots together. Mike: A kind painter who owns a B&B House on Rabbit Cove and takes Beauty and Dilly under his wing.

Two best friends are pushed to the breaking point when a class election gets out of hand! Rivalry and ridiculousness abound in this delicious, zanily-illustrated adventure for readers who love Wimpy Kid and Dog Man. Toy-Based Characterization: One of Beauty's favorite toys is a ragdoll her mother handmade for her; she calls her PJ, short for Plain Jane. PJ is a bit lopsided-looking, but Beauty loves the doll because her mother took the time to make it for her and tends to hug her for comfort. In contrast, Beauty's father splurges on a giant pink rabbit from Harrod's for her birthday; Beauty finds it hideous and it's far too big to play with or hold close, showing how her father doesn't really know her and cares more about flashing his money around than getting something his daughter really likes.

I also used this time for research, which I also didn’t do ahead of writing my first novel. My novel is set at a cookie factory. Although I have a PhD in Food Science and previous experience as a quality assurance manager, I’d never worked in that type of plant. I had to research special requirements, like handling of ingredients and equipment. I also had to create a company profile, decide what my product would be, and draw a rough sketch. First Draft – Jan to Feb 2019 Dilly, in sharp contrast to Gerry, is a very good mother to Beauty. She is constantly kind and supportive of her and does her best to make her safe and happy. Honorary Aunt: Avril is this to Beauty (she being Beauty's father's first ex-wife, who is on good terms with Beauty's mother). She refers to her as "Auntie Avril" and mentions she always buys her good birthday gifts. She also lets Beauty and Dilly stay at her house temporarily after they leave Gerry. Not with Them for the Money: Dilly tries to explain to Gerry that she was never remotely interested in his ability to afford expensive gifts; all she wanted was for him to "look after [her]" (implying she wanted a father figure more than anything). Gerry doesn’t seem to be able to comprehend this.

Justice is sweet when a school bully gets a taste of his own medicine. A hilarious new Cookie Chronicles adventure that middle-school readers who love Wimpy Kid and Dog Man will gobble up with gusto. Embarrassing Middle Name: Beauty's middle name is Mercedes (her father’s car) and she is teased mercilessly, with Skye saying should be called ‘ Ugly Skoda’. I'm very thankful to NetGalley and the publisher for granting me an ARC of this book. The review below is entirely my own opinion:
