About this deal

Ruth seems like a good mother and her relationship with her daughter gets more interesting as Kate gets older. I do wish there was more of Kate in the books but I love what is there. I like how Ruth takes Kate seriously. Because Hilary first mentioned the poor food choices, I now almost laugh when I read about what Ruth feeds Kate, what Kate eats and Ruth often too, when specific foods are mentioned. I hope the nutritional quality of foods improves. The next book is partly set in Italy. Maybe there? They now have at least one person they know with a vegetable garden and a fruit tree so maybe they’ll get some of the harvest? Cliffhanger alert! Before you read this book, make sure you have the next book in the series waiting! My mouth dropped open at the end of this book and I barely want to take the time to write a review before delving into the next book, The Dark Angel. This would allow for the regulation of issues such as hours of operation, number of lorry movements, control of dust, noise, light and/or odour emissions from the area and the cleaning of lorry wheels and chassis to protect the surface of public roads. Do not go out to the lane ahead but turn left onto a straight tree-lined path heading S, which soon starts to climb gently. In 200m the path forks by a sign for Meenfield Wood.

MY THOUGHTS: I love this series and I love books featuring the plight of the homeless, books that portray them for the real people that they are, with pasts and history, with thoughts, feelings, emotion. Elly Griffiths does all that, and more. After passing a few properties the vineyard is visible off to the right, beyond an orchard. At the far end cross the river on a footbridge and follow the path alongside the garden fence for Mill House. At the end of the walk there are three tearooms in Otford: The Olive Tree in the Hospices of Hope charity shop (01959-524322; open to 5pm Sat & Mon–Fri summer, 4pm Sun & Mon–Fri winter); Sally's Cake Emporium (01959-928447; open to 4pm Tue–Sun); and the Pond View Café (01959-522150; open daily to 4.30pm). There are also two pubs on the High Street, The Bull (01959-523198) and The Woodman (01959-522195). The North Downs Way runs for 246 km along the length of the North Downs (with two sections at its eastern end), from Farnham in Surrey to Dover in Kent.

Eddie is found stabbed and murdered in front of the police station, which galvanises Nelson's team to up their efforts in finding Barbara. The gentle Bilbo is murdered in a similar manner to Eddie. The investigation suggests that a community of homeless people live in the disused and dangerous chalk tunnels of Lynn and Norwich and there are rumours of an underground society. Two local women disappear and there are whispers that they might be being held underground. One is Sam, a housewife with four children, the other is DS David Clough's partner, Cassandra, with whom he has a child. Ruth and Nelson race to find the women and a murderer. Ruth rushes to Eltham on hearing her mum has suffered a stroke. It takes about 15 minutes to walk the loop. But we spent lot’s of time writing our names on tree stumps with the fallen chalk and building a den. As well as the chalkface there’s also a pond to explore. Local volunteers are working hard to clear the overgrown bushes and improve the paths. And they’ve done a great job. However, there is still lot’s of nettles so you may want to wear long trousers!

The Chalk Pit by Elly Griffiths is book nine in the Ruth Galloway series and I'm wondering if this series had done it's best for me and it's time to move on. It's a bit of a sad thought since I found the first books quite good, but this book and the one before has just not worked out so well for me. Adapted from Notes From Deep Time: A Journey Through Our Past and Future Worlds by Helen Gordon, published by Profile and available at guardianbookshop.com The story is initially about a homeless women who goes missing. Rather than spelling out that such a person was less valued or part of an underclass she lets the story reveal the facts. Firstly, it is some time before anyone realises she is missing (it seems such people drift in and out as part of their itinerant ways). Then it becomes difficult tracing next of kin or finding other hostel uses to speak to the police. When a further couple of incidents occur in relation to 2 male rough sleepers it seems no-one knows their real names or will miss then either. But they were friends of the missing woman and one thought she was 'going underground'.And Cloughie? Cloughie is probably Harry's best friend (other than Ruth) and the absolute antithesis of political correctness. Cloughie in love is a whole different story - we get to see a softer side to him - and a great development. Then we have the ending that fell flat and was utterly boring. It is just not fun when you spend a day reading a book, and it feels like you have wasted the time. The archeology aspect was what drove me to start reading this book, but not even it feels interesting anymore. Now, I'm not even sure if it's worth reading future books and as I said before it's a bit sad when a series you have enjoyed just doesn't work anymore... The Chalk Pit’ by Edward Thomas is a lyrical depiction of an abandoned chalk-pit and the “fullness” or life one speaker senses there.

Additionally, the poet makes use of half-rhyme. Also known as slant or partial rhyme, half-rhyme is seen through the repetition of assonance or consonance. This means that either a vowel or consonant sound is reused within one line, or multiple lines of verse. For example “briar” and “amphitheatre” in lines three and four, as well as “emptiness” and “silence” in line thirteen. Follow the footpath across a field and steeply down through a wood to reach the A225. Cross over and go down Station Road. After passing under the railway bridge by Shoreham station veer right into a large field and continue on a new permissive path parallel to the road. On the far side go through the churchyard, joining the Darent Valley Path (DVP). Continue down Church Street to the River Darent. The 16 thC Broughton Manor was originally a Crown property housing part of the retinue at Otford Palace. A planning and and regulatory committee meeting at Surrey County Council should have considered the application on January 26 but it was deferred because of last-minute challenges to the application. Now it appeared that Ley used the Puddifoot controversy against himself to make it look like he was the victim of a vicious Labor smear campaign. At one of his rallies he made a startling claim. Like its predecessors (The Woman in Blue, 2016, etc.), Griffith’s ninth is complex and character-driven, providing an excellent mystery whose very last sentence will leave you yearning for the next installment. Hyman Goldstein was well known for taking these regular walks. It was feasible that Ley — or someone he’d hired, for, as former justice minster he had access to a lot of criminals — could have pushed Goldstein to his death. However it happened, for the third time in less than a decade, one of Ley’s rivals had met a sudden, unexpected and unusual demise. I closed the cover of The Chalk Pit with a smile on my face, and a sense of anticipation for what is to come in The Dark Angel, the next in the series. Archaeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway is called in when several bones are found in one of the many underground chalk mine tunnels under the city of Norwich, England. The architect planning an underground restaurant is hoping they’re ancient, but testing reveals not only that they’re fairly recent, but that they’d been boiled and cut open, a sinister hint of cannibalism. Meantime, Ruth’s one-time lover DCI Nelson, the father of her daughter, Kate, is asked by rough sleeper Eddie O’Toole to look into the disappearance of Barbara Murray, another rough sleeper who hasn’t been seen in any of her usual haunts. When Eddie’s found stabbed to death and soon after another homeless man is also found stabbed, Nelson begins to take the search for Barbara more seriously. Then a middle-class mother of four vanishes from her home, and the police go all out to find her. While all this is happening, Ruth and Nelson, who remains married, maintain a delicately balanced relationship. Nelson’s wife allows him to spend time with Kate, but neither of his grown daughters knows of her existence. The missing housewife has one thing in common with the rough sleepers: they all spent time at a center run by an ex-con who’s found religion and changed his ways. Wild rumors abound about the old chalk mine tunnels that run for miles under Norwich, and a statement that someone made about Barbara going underground lead the police to some hidden doors. Is it possible that a literally underground group could be responsible for the deaths?
