You’ll have to decide what type of inputs you’ll need from an MPC, but if you know you’ll be needing lots of varied I/O, you’re probably going to find life is easier grabbing an X or MPC Key. A typical workflow might begin with loading a drum kit, and creating a beat, using a combination of drawing notes in gridmode, and recording in real time, followed by adding effects to individual pads in the kit, or across the entire kit. Then you might load one or two instrument plugins and program or record some MIDI parts, using either the pads or a MIDI keyboard. Interaction with the instruments, like any of the MPC's main views, can be directly through the touch-screen, or via the four physical 'Q-Link' knobs, or by tapping any parameter or field and using the main encoder. The Q-links can be banked through different targets with dedicated buttons, but you can simply touch any on-screen element and the knobs will jump to that section. The good thing is that the MPC One plus is actually a tiny bit cheaper than the original MPC One, the bad news is that you’re likely to get a lot less for your old MPC One model on the second hand market, as many people will likely be selling off to update.
These four MPCS all differ in a variety of ways but it’s very important to realise that all four MPCs run the exact same internal software with the same features (the only exception is the MPC Key 61 does not have Ableton ‘Live Control’ Mode). Alternatively you can use USB disks but this will use up one of your USB ports although you can use USB hubs to expand this on all models. It’s important to note that the MPC One Plus is only USB 2.0, while the others use USB 3.0, so USB speeds will be slower on the One.
You should get an instant answer on whether your application has been successful, though in some rare cases Klarna or V12 may need to look at the application in more detail. The pads themselves have been downsized a little, making them closer in size to those found on the Novation Launchpad Pro, but they still feel excellent to play and are up there with the most responsive you’ll find on any MIDI controller. So, there’s more breathing space on the 4GB models which means you can more free and easy with your plugins, and maybe more lazy with your project sample management. But of course you don’t have to use plugins like Studio Strings (‘synth’ plugins use barely any RAM), and for acoustic instruments there’s keygroup instrument alternatives such as MPC Orchestral which are more highly optimised to use minimal RAM. They both have 4 Q-Link knobs and 16 pads; the Live II’s pads are full size, whereas the One’s are shrunk down a bit. The MPC One actually has four more function buttons than the Live II with 31. Things like WiFi and Bluetooth are missing from the MPC One, which isn’t a total dealbreaker but is useful for syncing the Live II to your Splice library, for instance. The MPC One also does not support direct USB file transfer to a computer, and comes with only 2GB of onboard storage compared to the Live II’s 16GB. There are various ports designed on the unit, and there is a USB port that allows connectivity with the host computer. Overall, the MPC One is an excellent introduction to standalone sampling and sequencing. As far as an affordable entry in the MPC line goes, it delivers on all fronts, and fortunately does not sacrifice essential functionality to cut cost. Whether you’re a seasoned producer or a beginner, the MPC One is a fantastic tool.

This will only require the installation of a single driver to use the MPC One as a controller with MPC 2.8.
