About this deal

No worries, Emperor Trigo forgives you and welcomes your entire people to join the empire and he'll even settle you on good land.

i first read these as an 8 or 9 year old in Ranger and Look and Learn magazines in Melbourne Australia. The artwork is painted, with a genuinely beautiful colour palette, and Lawrence's crystal-clear storytelling is brilliantly cinematic, with excellent use of establishing shots, rapid cuts in point of view, and a mix of long, medium and close-up shots. Throughout the series, the Trigans confront the Hericon empire, their main rival, whose appearance and motifs lean more toward the Byzantine and Persian. Villains, often officers or councillors appointed by Trigo, who must have been a Horrible Judge of Character, try to usurp the throne or place upon it a puppet emperor; happened lots of times.Even Evil Has Standards: The monstrous Worst Man is the foulest criminal on Elekton but he does have one specific standard - he's a firm believer in a fair fight (he even kills a henchman who tried to shoot Trigo in their match) and when he's dying due to a snakebite accident after his scrap with Trigo was interrupted, he's a Graceful Loser and concedes that Trigo is the winner. Loony Laws: The Vorg tribe has an ancient law of revenge, anyone who harms a member of the tribe needs to be avenged immediately regardless of circumstance. Aliens Speaking English: Averted; a human scientist dedicates most of his life to translating the works of the crashed Trigan spaceship.

In the fourth Lunar month of the year of Yedd, the ‘Princess of Vorg’, largest ocean-going liner ever, was launched in Trigan City harbour. For example, the opening sequence of both the serialized version and the 1978 collection portrays a Trigan spacecraft and its dead passengers hurtling through space, but the collected edition enlarges the four of the six panels from the original first page. Trigo or his relatives set off on an expedition to some continent that had never been mentioned before; at least twice.True, the portrayal of "barbarian" races is, how shall we put it, of its time, but it just comes across as silly, it's a tiny part of the overall narrative, and anyone who can read this and see it as some sort of fascist tract really needs to get off their high horse and stop thinking children are so gullible.
