About this deal

However, don’t let this deter you, as the exposure latitude on Tri-X is quite forgiving, also allowing you to over- or underexpose to achieve brighter or darker images (just as you would with Portra). The modern version of Kodak Portra 400 was introduced in 2010 to replace the previous Natural Color (NC) and Vibrant Color (VC) versions, with a more balanced color profile, with an emphasis on producing natural skin tones. For the sake of this article I’m going to consider sunset and sunrise to be the time when direct sunlight is no longer on the foreground or subject, but the clouds in the sky are lit up with color.

Will have to pick fast speed as unable to take the tripod and at near 86 years my old hands not as steady as 30 years ago ha ha ha! Kodak Portra is a go-to pick in the film community for its color saturation over a wide range of lighting conditions, latitude with skin tones, and forgiving exposure. I realize I don’t get the same result as other people do because I don’t shoot it the way they do – and that’s a very important thing for a photographer to realize. People often ask me if they need to develop the film differently when shooting Portra 160 at ISO 100, etc. I guess for AWB, if you are constantly remeasuring the WB every time the light changes, that might also work, but is perhaps more effort than it’s worth? There isn’t a huge difference between the different Portra 400 films, but there are small distinctions as they each have a slightly varied look. I assume, since I never shot them, that it’s like they took the differing attributes of the NC and VC versions and somehow got them to work together. Portra 160 however to me is almost too soft at wide apertures even when using sharp lenses such as a Leica Summilux ASPH 50mm f1. This means that it is known as a mid-speed film, and will be able to take photos in most common lighting situations.

Kodak Portra 400 35mm film review | Digital Camera World

I had one photo, again with pink and white blossoms in front of a yellow house with a blue sky… The photo looked nothing like what my eyes saw that day, as it was very washed out and very disappointed. Since I want the sky and sunlit structures to appear bright and the rails to appear a medium tone, this means a two stop filter would be perfect. It’d be easy for people to see what film someone with more followers than you or I will ever have is shooting and be influenced to go with that too.I like black and white as depending on how you develop the film you can make some nice high contrast images with a broad dynamic range. So while Portra may not be the film of choice for a landscape photographer, if you’re interested in shooting more landscapes and Portra is what you know, then have at it. I would consider adding less or no compensation for an object that I want to appear more neutral in tone, such as a green tree or a red barn. EDUCATION: Chris graduated Magna Cum Laude from Adelphi University with a degree in Communications in Journalism in 2009.

The tricky thing with this recipe is getting the custom white balance measurement correct, and there’s not an easy answer for that. The new Portra was introduced to address the modern method of scanning slides and editing and printing the resulting images from digital files. The film is also quite forgiving, so is ideal for those photographers who make a few exposure miscalculations.

Everything I do and what I learn along the way gets shared on here, to inform and inspire you to get out and shoot as much - and as well - as you can too. Also an incredibly versatile film, I feel very comfortable overexposing my Portra 400 to get blown-out highlights, the film handles one or two stops of under and over exposure with ease. Kodak Portra 400 is a film bound to not disappoint you–especially if you can know and understand what you’re going to be getting beforehand. Consistent and reliable performance: This film is known for its consistent and reliable performance, which means you can count on it to deliver stunning results every time.
