The increased range of the color spectrum is a benefit even when the movie is not striving to be a Technicolor spectacle. One aspect of the original Evil Dead trilogy and even the TV series is the addition of humor and dark comedy to the horror that surrounds this franchise. Like the latest "remake/reboot" this movie is gory, and brutal and has some humor but it is not the same camp of the earlier Ash-driven movies.

It's easy to pick holes in some of the logic around the Necronomicon – the notion of the vinyl, if not a dig by Cronin into dippy hipsters, feels just a step too far, even for this franchise – but even then, Cronin wrings every last ounce of horror out of it, using a DJ set up, noise cancelling headphones and an overhead air duct to deliver some outstanding shocks.could argue that it doesn't help us care about the affected family, but I'd argue that wouldn't have helped much.

The entire mix is note perfect, with dialogue perfectly legible throughout, and the deep bass, sparkling highs and every stop in between showcases a huge frequency range which will give your audio set up an exercise like its not had in a while. Make-up and VFX are put to brilliant use as some very grievous bodily harm is dished out with an almost maniacal euphoria and its tone falls somewhere between the Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Home Alone, the pitch-black humour coming from the outrageous situations Cronin places his victims…sorry, characters in.Yeah, we’ve got the Book of the Dead, there’s a scene with a chainsaw and the name – other than that, I was hard pressed to find any similarities (or any pleasure watching this). As you might expect, many moments in the film take place in shadow or the cover of darkness, and on this disc they are more vivid and expertly delineated. Once Ellie is possessed, Cronin straps us in, take the brakes off and hits the gas, never taking his foot off until the very end and its riotously entertaining.

Of course there are silly bits like opening doors when there is a demon lurking outside but this isn't Citizen Kane so does it really matter. Ellie's sister Beth comes to visit when an earthquake rattles Los Angeles and creates a hole underneath their high-rise.

We reviewed the Region free UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Evil Dead Rise on a JVC-DLA N5 Ultra HD 4K projector and a Panasonic DP-UB9000 Dolby Vision HDR10 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Darker sequences are bathed in a blueish-green filter that has a moldy texture that keeps the tone within its aesthetic. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and their descent into madness is both captivating and chilling. The notorious blood and guts the franchise is infamous for is now produced from some genuinely creative and wince-inducing tableau, all manner of household implements being put to very disturbing use in some truly stomach-churning ways. The 4K video image with HDR looks amazing and the Dolby Atmos audio mix sounds perfect and demo-worthy.
