About this deal

A three-star, or VS, Armagnac is a mix of several Armagnacs that have seen at least one year of ageing in wood. There are 10 different grape varieties that can be used in armagnac production, though four – ugni blanc, baco, folle blanche, and colombard – are most common. And frankly, for a liquid this good that’s been sat in the barrel for two decades, it feels like a bargain.

Best armagnacs to replace your favourite cognac | The Independent

The house of Delord was established in 1893, so this 1993 vintage was produced in its centenary year! Traditional, small-scale, and truly “ craft”, armagnac may not have the bling factor of cognac, but this characterful and French brandy is as rich in flavour as it is in history. The Armagnac is first aged in new oak barrels for the first half of the maturation process and then aged in older, more mature casks in this double maturation process. The result is very fruity on the nose, and there’s just a hint of a cider-like sourness and a little pear, alongside a farmy funkiness.Run by the Arnaud and Grassa families since 1912, Domaine Tariquet has a longstanding history of developing the production of Bas-Armagnac AOC and pioneered the production of white and rosé wines from Côtes de Gascogne IGP, during the 1980s.

If you like brandy, especially the kind of aged expressions that you can wrap yourself around in front of a fireplace, you really owe it to yourself to discover this remarkable spirit. It comes from small producers and family-run establishments which perpetuate ancestral traditions and know-how. Production wise, Cognac produced around 250 million bottles in 2020 versus 5 million bottles of Armagnac. This brandy is a blend of very old armagnacs that have been aged an average of 30 years in oak barrels selected to represent the most typical flavour notes from Delord.

Chateau de Laubade Bas Armagnac VSOP– This entry-level bottling, aged 6 to 12 years, is nothing out of the ordinary, presenting as an unfinished, rough, and rather astringent spirit. Dartigalongue, Bas Armagnac, Hors d’Age, 40% ABV, 750 ml is a powerful, bold Armagnac that is several decades old.
