About this deal

I’ve been painting a lot of Adeptus Custodes models fromGamesWorkshop (GW) for a personal Warhammer 40k collection. I really liked the gold metallic theme, shiny and warm, with splashes of red, which reminded me of the ancient Roman military. So I went with the studio scheme using the box art as a reference.

The colour is bright enough to have plenty of pop and the consistency helps it flow into places where water would naturally accumulate and cause rust. Having to gradually build up layers of thin, translucent paint helps avoid going too far, making it very beginner-friendly if you're learning how to paint miniatures. After enjoying the time savings from spraying my first batch of 40k terrain with Citadel’s Wraithbone rattle can — a primer and base coat in one — I decided to go the same route with my custard lads. They’re 90% gold; this is a potentially huge time savings. Thanks for all of the responses! I've got a few test models set aside, so I'll be testing out many of these. I have tried many different acrylic golds and this range is the best range of metallic paints if you airbrush, they have the least graininess (I believe they are the finest ground pigment on the market for acrylic metallic paints) to the paint finish and they shoot supersmooth out of a airbrush:

Gold Armour

Spot Highlight the armor (gold and leadbelcher parts) with Stormhost Silver (try to ‘dot’ the edges of the armor only – less is more)! The Master of Mankind by Aaron Dembski-Bowden takes place during the Horus Heresy and gives you insight into the Emperor himself (and his finest creations). The eyes I basecoated Mephiston Red, layered with Evil Sunz Scarlet and final layer of Wild Rider Red. Add dots of pure white over the previous steps. This is the bit where suddenly it looks like metal and it’s very satisfying. You really are aiming for small dots (unless it’s a vehicle then you can go for bigger patches. Reds You can either mix the paint and thinner together outside of the airbrush reservoir, or within the airbrush (not recommended). In either case, make sure you’ve got the solution mixed well.

Starting with them laying down is much easier than starting with them standing up. Many of the hard-to-reach bits are dealt with much more smoothly, and when you stand them up there’s just a bit of obvious touching-up to do.With a fine tipped paintbrush do some slight recess shading by glazing in heavily thinned Scale75 inktensity violet in the recesses (1:10 dilution inktensity violet to thinner).

There’s just one last thing to show you for this scheme, the power lance blade. You could use this for any of the power weapons custodes wield. The Retributor Armor spray that GW does is decent enough, but I've been told that there's a better way:Fortunately, I did not have any of these problems with Greedy Gold. Notice that I tried the final prototype, but I was assured it is the real deal. Should I notice a difference to the retail version, I will update this post accordingly. I start by brushing on Citadel Khorne Red. If there’s any browns left I try to leave these showing in the recesses. In step 2 above switch the Vallejo metal color gold and Vallejo metal color copper mixture to Scale 75 dwarven gold. Mix this in with your Retributor Armour if you want to airbrush it, or simply want it to flow a tad better off your brush.

Ribbons – Two layers of highlights, the first is Rakarth Flesh and a little white added, the second is just adding more white to the previous mix. I am really surprised that the Retributor Armour is so different when comparing the spray and pot paints side by side. Brown may not be the most exciting colour around, but you’ll find you use it on just about every miniature you paint, even if it’s just for their boots. I have a lot of brown paints, but the one I use the most is Rhinox Hide. It’s a rich, chocolatey colour with great coverage that is my number one choice for dark brown basecoats. It helps to paint your heads separately no matter what you do, but this is especially important for your skin, because you don’t want to get flesh tones on your nice finished armor color. For the flesh tones, I wanted something a bit greyer and more inhuman than your standard Cadian Fleshtone. I go into more detail in the HTPE: Human Skin article, but for Caracalla, the skin is VGA Dwarf Skin mixed with a mid/slightly dark grey. To highlight, I mixed in more of the dwarf skin, though the entire color range I used has a good proportion of grey in it. Instead of a flesh wash, I used diluted nuln oil to wash the skin.

World Eaters

It’s coarse enough that you can feel it when you run a finger over it, and it seems to absorb paint like no-one’s business. I’m not sure the reason behind that, but it’s a pain.I had a similar thing happen when I sprayed a load of primaris marines with Averland Sunset, but managed to scrape off the texture with some vigorous toothbrush action. More importantly, it means that my Retributors look like they’ve been coated in cheap Christmas glitter. I highly recommend Retributor Armour as the gold metallic paint that can handle almost all your gold painting needs (unless you’re looking for a less-warm toned metallic). The paint pot version is superior in my opinion than the spray can version. Flooring and skulls – The same as the ribbons. I added the highlights to the most rearward facing edges on each miniature to tie the bases together.
