The beauty of the Nanopresso’s capsule-like design lies in the fact that all of the components for preparing espresso are contained neatly within. Open the thing up and you’ll find a water tank, espresso cup, portafilter and filter basket. There’s even a little brush and a coffee scoop that doubles as an espresso tamper. In look, price, and experience, the Nanopresso couldn’t be further than the top of the range espresso machines we’ve reviewed. And yet the taste is almost on par. It is more of a faff, it does involve boiling water and finding a flat spot if you’re outside, but the end result is seriously impressive. Remove the filter basket and add around 8 grams of freshly ground coffee, before shaking gently to create a level bed. It’s unlikely you’ll be bringing a coffee scale on your camping trip, so you’ll just have to eyeball it!

Thanks Simon! I’m using the Barrista Kit, works the same. Extremely tamped, (presumably) “fine” grind on the 1Presso Mini Grinder, and a steady, lovely stream. While we may be satisfied, it’s never fully satisfied, is it? Good suggestion to tinker with grind until approaching the edge of drip-drip/bitter-slow extraction is reached. Then either configure that special ‘spot’ varying tamping and/or grind. And, I imagine, removing/replacing the pressure piece. In fact, we feel like it’s precisely because this machine is so simple and the technology is boiled right down to the essentials, that it’s easy to tweak and see immediate results. Within a few days, you do feel like you’re learning a lot about honing in on that perfect espresso.
