About this deal

In war and peace, Ambrose McGonigal lived an extraordinary life, with conflict never far away. During the Second World War, he served as a Commando and in the SBS, while after it he served in Belfast as the most senior Catholic judge during the height of the Troubles. He was mentioned in dispatches for the impressive manner in which he commanded his troop in the Litani River Raid in Lebanon and recruited by David Stirling for his newly formed SAS unit. Mayne set an unimpeachable benchmark as a hard-drinking, free-swinging firebrand, even by rugby’s generously broad parameters of horseplay, schoolboy pranks and questionable behaviour. It was a lifestyle choice that refused to be constrained or tempered by army life to boot. Macintyre concedes that “killing highly trained pilots was, arguably, an even more effective way of crippling enemy airpower than destroying the planes themselves”. The exact nature of their relationship is unknown and to some extent, owing to the paucity of documents, unknowable.

Forming several groupings, one each led by Mayne, McGonigal, Stirling, and two others, the men had planned to regroup at a rendezvous point after sabotaging five German and Italian airfields. This is an excellent book. Not a constricted biography of the brothers but includes detailed information on the development of Commandos and L Detachment of the SAS from the start, including the dreadful operation where so many were killed, injured, or captured. Paddy Mayne’s role in the commandos, SAS and how he mourned the loss of a close friend and fellow soldier and how he tried to solve the riddle of his disappearance are given significant attention. Ambrose’s role and times in the SBS is very useful additional material on the activities of the unit of which more is still to be unravelled. Though he suggests that something darker than pure pragmatism may have been animating the blood-sodden Irishman that night.

He also plays Sayed in The State and Usman Abboud in the BBC Two series Industry. Paul Boche will play Walter Essner in SAS Rogue Heroes This episode, as intimate as it was gruesome, “veered away from sabotage and close to assassination”, the author maintains, and it has dogged Mayne’s reputation ever since.Justice McGonigal is mentioned in Tony Geraghty's The Irish War: the hidden conflict between the IRA and British Intelligence [5] as having been "forced to carry a gun under his robe" due to terrorism in Northern Ireland, which would claim the lives of at least five judges or justices in Northern Ireland. They fight to keep Paddy’s legacy alive, and are keen to point out that the ‘muscle for hire’ image many people remember him for doesn’t tell the full story. For instance, they reveal he carried a poetry book called Other Men’s Flowers into battle – and SAS: Rogue Heroes does show this side of him, as we see Mayne reciting poetry in prison during the first episode. They also tell the story of how – when his best friend Eoin McGonigal (played by Donal Finn in SAS: Rogue Heroes) was killed in action, Paddy gave up his leave to go and search for Eoin’s grave, putting himself in considerable danger, and wrote a heartfelt letter to Eoin’s mother sending his condolences. But more controversially, there is little doubt that his vast capacity for sheer violence had a devastating toll on the enemy and must therefore be counted against Paddy’s worst excesses. He’s also made countless appearances in many other popular TV shows such as The Crown, Tipping Point and Father Brown. Jason Watkins plays Winston Churchill In May 2019, it emerged that the creator of Peaky Blinders is adapting the story of the birth of the Special Air Service as a television drama. Here, John O'Sullivan examined the life and times of Col Robert Blair "Paddy" Mayne - an original member of the service and an Irish rugby international with a reputation as a hard-drinking, free-swinging firebrand.
