Formulated without fragrance or colours, it gently soothes as a moisturiser and cleanses as a soap substitute or bath additive. Medicines that should be initiated by a specialist and prescribed by primary care prescribers only under a shared care protocol, once the patient has been stabilised. Emollients can be applied as often as you like to keep the skin well moisturised and in good condition. Ideally, this should be done at least 3 or 4 times a day.

Moisturisers are helpful for all dry skin conditions, particularly eczema, which gets worse when the skin is allowed to dry out. Used regularly they help restore the skin's smoothness, softness and flexibility by helping the skin retain moisture. This reduces redness, scaling and itching. Emulsifying wax itself contains cetostearyl alcohol and sodium lauryl sulfate) If your skin stings after using an emollient wash product and does not settle after rinsing, ask a pharmacist to recommend a different product. Preparations containing emulsifying ointment should not be used before phototherapy or in phototesting procedures. If you're using a steroid cream or another treatment for your skin condition, wait 20 to 30 minutes between using an emollient and using the other treatment. Ask a doctor which one to use first.

People hypersensitive to any of the ingredients may experience skin reactions, such as burning, itching, rash or redness of the skin after using emulsifying ointment.
