I photographed the tiny dried rose stem, under 8″ tall with its bud just under 1″, and many other flowers around the house. Many were not reachable with a tripod and came out a little soft. Some plump succulents may have no sharp edges and will only convey a sense of sharpness like the one below in the gallery. Just because this is an inexpensive phone lens doesn’t mean you can get sloppy. Nope - you still need to have plenty of light, as little movement as possible, and some idea of what you you are photographing. But take care of those basics and this lens will deliver some impressive performance. You can’t compare the best clip-on phone lens to any macro lens for use on a real camera because no matter how nice the lens is it is still taking a photograph on a cellphone - and that imposes some hard limits in any photography, but particularly in the world of macro. It makes more sense to ask what you are using this images for. I actually publish a large number of iPhone pictures every week, because it is my go-to method for capturing all the snapshots I use in my videos every week. And they are important to me. And this lens is a great tool for me to get the kind of quality images that you have come to expect. The Apexel Macro Lens Kit is more user-friendly than the microscope adaptor, at least to me and Dennis agrees I tried a small tabletop tripod as the first step in stabilizing it. I mounted the whole gear on it with a small LED light at the top. I tried and took several photographs with that setup, but the tripod height not being adjustable posed a problem. Macro photography is really just taking photos of super small thingsg a macro lens, and this means that you can capture flowers, textures, branding – really anything the size of your fingernail. So, I went to Colonial Williamsburg, where they pay a lot of money for landscaping to take advantage of all the potential macro subjects. Yes - all that was left of my wide angle telephoto macro combo lens! I had forgotten that the lady had let me keep the thing. Probably as a consolation prize after she told me she never wanted to see me again. Optical zoom is essentially what happens when you use a magnifying glass or a telescope and is not to be confused with digital zoom which is really just image cropping. Most phones offer impressive digital zoom capabilities but you should never zoom on your smartphone.I used the BeastCam Pro Camera app from BeastGrip to take my photos for this post and accompanying video for a few reasons. I pulled out a couple of watches and pens from my collection as macro subjects. Watches posed a little challenge, but pen nibs came out rather sharp. I love the tripod!
