The end credits for this season finale is unique; the song Spellbound replaces the theme as the fourth season's logo zooms in, unlike previous finales, which shows the logo zoom out. Over at the Upside Down Creel house, it’s not long before the vines take hold of Robin, Steve, and Nancy, trapping and strangling all of them. As if Steve Harrington hasn’t been choked out enough already this season! Anyway, things seem dire for that group, too. Post-production for the episode wasn't completed until just a few hours before release; the Duffer Brothers even approved 20 VFX shots hours before Vol 2. dropped. Most of the emotional scenes in the episode were either improvised, reworded, or different from the original script. Confirmed by the Stranger Things writers, Eddie telling Dustin, "I love you, man.", Lucas yelling "Erica, help!", Mike saying to El, "You're my superhero.", and Hopper kissing Joyce before departing were all unscripted. But it’s not all gloom and doom. Leave it to Eddie to bring the house down (quite literally) with a rendition of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” The Upside Down has never been serenaded quite like this before. The imagery of the balloons bursting with blood encapsulates the merging of joyous memories with the ominous undertones of the Upside Down. One of my absolute favorite things about Stranger Things is how it gives everyone in the group a chance to have their hero moment, to solve some puzzle, or fix a problem. No one is just dead weight along for the ride and the series is always stronger for it. Even silly stoner Argyle becomes an asset!
At the Hawkins Memorial Hospital, Max is comatose with casts covering the entirety of her limbs. Lucas reads to her while Erica and Susan Hargrove, Max’s mother, sit by her bedside. The Party arrives, and Lucas embraces Mike, Will, and El as he tells them the doctors aren't sure when Max will wake since it was a miracle she's even alive; her heart stopped for over a minute and she died clinically. El sits on Max's bed, holding her hand, and reassures Max that she will always be by her side. Using her powers, El transports the Void in Max's mind, only to find it completely empty as El screams Max's name.Master of Puppets" by Metallica - In the Upside Down, Eddie distracts the Demobats with the power of heavy metal. In the decaying woods of the Upside Down, Nancy, Steve, and Robin travel to the Creel House. As they walk, Steve reminisces about his stupidity and confidence during his junior year, and thanks Nancy for metaphorically waking him up two years prior. He tells Nancy that she had changed his life for the better but wonders if they could have lasted as a couple had he changed before he met Nancy. Steve reveals that in his dream of traveling across the country with his family, he pictured Nancy by his side. But he admits that now it is too late for his dream to become a reality. The two are interrupted when Robin announces that they've arrived at the Creel home and the group sees Erica's light at the playground.
