Likeable teacher George is new to the area, but becomes friends with Claudia when he starts tutoring her troubled son, Rhys. She has just recovered from breast cancer, her ex-husband has a new partner and a baby on the way, and she is losing connection with her teenage son. The other suspects include George (Line of Duty’s Craig Parkinson, an actor with the charisma to lift every show he’s in), who arrives at the school to teach adult literacy; Joanne (Sara Powell), a nosy neighbour who appears to relish the drama; and the mother and father of the missing girl, because aren’t we conditioned not to trust the parents in these cases? The lonely primary school nurse is recovering from double mastectomy, while struggling to maintain a meaningful relationship with her 12-year-old son. Then, when local girl Emily Winter goes missing, Claudia becomes fixated with the case, but her personal mission for the truth soon gets out of hand.

How to watch The House Across the Street

Ian-Lloyd Anderson (Game of Thrones) and Lisa Dwyer Hogg (Silent Witness) play Emily’s heartbroken parents Owen and Sabine, while Doctor Who star Sara Powell plays Joanne, a supportive yet suspicious neighbour. Shirley Henderson, known for her roles in Harry Potter and Bridget Jones, will lead the cast as the lead character Claudia. Claudia has a very complicated story, she is recovering from cancer and struggling to build a relationship with her son.

The House Across the Street combined sharply observed characters with a genuinely compelling concept. While some of the dialogue veered a little too close to exposition to be convincing – “the breast reconstruction has been a success after your double mastectomy”, said a doctor, as though Claudia might have forgotten her recent surgery –, the drama’s well-paced intrigue made its script’s occasional clangers feel forgivable. The second episode will air at 9pm on Tuesday, October 18 and then the drama will return to screens on Monday, October 24, and Tuesday, October 25 for the final two episodes. Shirley says: "Claudia’s a quiet woman, who’s on her own a lot and in her own thoughts. She has been lonely for a while, she’s had a lot of medical things going on and I think she’s having a breakdown. Then one day everything changes when she walks up her path towards her house and sees that there’s something going on in her street. Maybe the case of missing Emily is what she needs to feel worthy and alive again."Craig says: "I found it immediately intriguing. When I read the scripts, I initially thought it was going to be one thing, and then it morphed into something else completely. Also Shirley is one of my favourite actors, so as soon as her name was mentioned I couldn’t turn the job down!"

The House Across The Street follows Claudia, a lonely single mother. Recovering from breast cancer while working as a school nurse, Claudia’s days appear bleak. Craig says: "As a parent, I find it very difficult to hear about reports of real-life cases, I always turn the television or radio off. But this isn’t just a series about a missing child, it’s also a thriller about unhealthy obsession!" Where you've seen the cast of The House Across the Street before

There will be four hour-long episodes of The House Across the Street, with the first airing on Monday, October 17 at 9pm on Channel 5 and My5. The second episode will then air the following day (Tuesday, October 18) at 9pm, with the final two instalments showing next week. The new series, which follows hot on the heels of Channel 5's Maxine, is written by White House Farm creator Giula Sandler. The project was previously called The Winter Child. But it’s not too bad. Netflix parodied this sort of thing in The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, and they can never be taken too seriously, but this one has a pleasingly off-kilter tone. No character behaves quite as you’d expect them to in a situation such as this, which involves a schoolgirl who disappears from a playground near her home.

Shirley says: " It’s the human condition to be curious. People are interested in the sad and the bad things that happen in life. But the thing about our story is that Claudia goes to extremes – she goes to a point where her interested could be dangerous!" Craig says: "George is recently separated from an unhappy marriage. He’s a good, loving dad, who’s trying to make a new start. He doesn’t know that many people in the area, but he begins a friendship with Claudia that turns, he believes, into a sort of relationship."

The House Across the Street is full of characters nursing ulterior motives, most of which are yet to be revealed. Joanne’s emotional investment in the disappearance rivalled Claudia’s, and the revelation of her creepy doll collection in a garden shed (“this is my happy place”) only made her more unsettling.
