About this deal

Obviously it’s too early to tell whether these new probiotic pellets are actually improving their intestinal flora, but that is what they are intended to do. My wife has recently been reading about the benefits of probiotics for humans, and she’s convinced that a lot of health conditions from irritable bowel syndrome to allergies can improve by taking acidophilus, eating lots of yogurt and generally encouraging the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut. So I am pretty confident our dear bunnies are going to have to make fewer trips to their vet now that we’ve finally figured out a way to get probiotics for rabbits into their little tummies.

Bacillus subtilis suspensions were spread on Muller–Hinton agar plates, onto which antibiotic disks of penicillin, kanamycin, doxycycline, tetracycline, gentamicin, lincomycin, erythromycin, cefotaxime, and streptomycin were placed. After 24 h incubation at 37°C, the inhibition zone was measured ( 24). Animals and Cells The microbiota, represented by a great number of microbial agents which colonise specific ecological niches, contribute to the health status of the gastrointestinal tract due to its multiple functions. The term probiotic derives from two words: pro of the Latin language and βίος of the Greek language and literally means “for life” [ 11]. The history of probiotics began with the civilisation of humans: since the times of the Greeks and the Romans, the properties of fermented products were known, and their consumption was recommended both in children and in convalescents [ 12]; they are mentioned also in the Bible and in the sacred books of Hinduism. Particularly, they were identified in cultured dairy products. As reported in some studies, it seems that “fermented dairy products” were known also by Sumerians and that pictorial finds on the treatment of milk emerged during excavation in ancient Mesopotamia [ 11]. Moreover, archaeologists found evidence of fermented products derived from rice, fruits, honey, and cereals in Neolithic villages in China, Egypt, and Mesopotamia [ 11]. Moreover, Homer and Plinio tell of fermented milk and suggest its use in the treatment of gastrointestinal infections [ 11]. At the origin, these products were considered part of “folklore” until the healthy properties began to make their way and they were used as functional food linked to the presence of probiotic bacteria [ 11]. Considering the literature, probiotic is a relatively new word used to indicate microorganisms being able to provide healthy effects in humans and animals [ 12].

When selecting a probiotic for a specific species, there are numerous characteristics the probiotic needs to possess to be effective and viable. They should: Don’t be sorry – ask as many questions as you ever want to/need to, because that’s what these forums are aboutThe innate immune system is used as the first line of defense to various pathogens. NLRs are a kind of pattern recognition receptor (PRR). PRRs have been implicated in pathogen control and elimination and have been recently identified as key mediators of inflammatory and immune responses. There are few reports about NLRs in rabbits, and only the predicted sequences are available in Genebank. At present, the full lengths of some NLRs in rabbits have been obtained, and their biological functions (no published data) have been verified. In this study, the dietary administration of B. subtilis increased the NOD1, NLRC3, and NLRX1. NLRs detect and sense microbial components and then lead to the activation of an inflammatory response and promote the secretion of cytokines ( 34, 35). A previous study has shown that NLRCs induce IFN-γ and IL-1β gene expression in Japanese flounder ( 36). Olive flounder NOD1 not only plays a major role in inhibition of Edwardsiella tarda growth but also enhances the activation of IL-1β, which is in turn implicated in the initiation of inflammation and host defense ( 37). IL-1β is a major proinflammatory cytokine that induces its own expression as well as the expression of other proinflammatory cytokines, adhesion molecules, and chemokines such as IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α, in turn initiating an inflammatory response and recruitment of antimicrobial cells such as neutrophils and macrophages ( 38). The main biological activity of IFN-γ is immune regulation, which includes innate and adaptive immunity. In previous studies, pretreatment with B. subtilis, the IFN-γ transcript levels remained high after infection with Citrobacter rodentium ( 39, 40). It has been shown to be a proinflammatory factor and has an antiviral effect ( 41). In this study, IFN-γ, IL-1β, and IL-8 were upregulated by dietary B. subtilis. It may be due to the activation of NLRs. You can't just feed your bunnies anything as they don't have the enzymes to process certain food types. An excellent example of this would be most vegetables which rabbits can not produce the enzyme to help them digest; they will pass through them. The following medications may reduce the efficacy of probiotics when given at the same time: antibiotics, antifungals. Most foods are manufactured industrially and contain almost exclusively cheap ingredients. Also, factors such as overpopulation lead to an increased demand for food that can be produced cost-effectively.

Resist the acidic gastric environment of the animal consuming them to reach the intended location for colonization (many times this is the large intestine/cecum). If your vet gives you pre-filled syringes, ask for extra needles, even if there are already needles on the pre-filled syringes, and change the needle before you inject your bunny. The live yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae(CNCM I-4407) 4b1702 to help repopulate the intestine with beneficial micro-organisms. According to guidelines for evaluating probiotics in food reported by a joint UN Food and Agricultural Organization World Health Organization working group, resistance to gastric acidity and bile salts are two of the most widely used in vitro tests based on both survival and growth studies. Furthermore, given serious concerns about increased resistance to antibiotics due to their regular use as additives, one aspect of probiotics that needs to be analyzed is antibiotic resistance. Probiotic strains, as well as bacteria used in food, can harbor resistant genes that can be transferred to pathogenic bacteria ( 8). As a result, probiotic strains intended for meat animals should be screened for antibiotic resistance ( 9). Pro-C Professional has been formulated specifically for veterinary use, with enhanced potency for use in more extreme cases requiring digestive support. It is a veterinary formulated complete probiotic and prebiotic soluble fibre blend enhanced with vitamin C and electrolytes. Its high palatability means it can be added to the drinking water or sprinkled onto food.

ReguTum™ Fibre & Probiotic Care for Rabbits is recommended for:

Rabbits are sensitive creatures; therefore, their diet must be well-balanced. Supplementation is often necessary since modern rabbit food usually contains only a limited amount of nutrients. This study was designed as in a model gastrointestinal tract experiment to investigate the survival of B. subtilis. Overnight cultures of B. subtilis were centrifuged at 3,000 × g for 10 min, washed twice with phosphate buffer saline, and resuspended in a new liquid medium (10 8 CFU mL −1). The new media were adjusted to pH 2.5 by adding a hydrochloric acid solution with 1% pepsin or to pH 7.2 with 1% trypsin and incubated at 37°C. At 0, 1, and 2 h of incubation, 100 μL of the cultures were removed and spread on modified nutrition agar for cell number estimation. Respectively, the bacterial suspensions were inoculated into modified nutrition broth with 0.3% bile salt and cultured at 37°C for 24 h. Optical density at 600 nm (OD600) was measured and compared to a control culture without bile salts. Protease Assay If you miss a dose, give it when you remember, but if it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed and give it at the next scheduled time, and return to the regular dosing schedule. Only give your pet two doses at once or give extra doses if instructed by your veterinarian.

We have a veterinarian who is a firm believer in holistic medicine for rabbits. He loves bunnies and he is always encouraging his patients to improve the overall health of their pets, rather than simply treating the most immediate symptoms. One of the things our vet always brings up, no matter what sort of ailment or condition we are talking about, is improving the health of a rabbit’s digestive system by adding more good bacterial flora. We have tried doing this and until recently we’ve not been very successful. You cannot define pre- or probiotics without first understanding something we’ve referenced a few times in previous blogs: the microbiome. The microbiome refers to billions and billions of microscopic living organisms (e.g. bacteria, protozoa, fungi, etc.) which reside throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract, but the largest diversity and abundance are located in the large intestine and cecum. The microbiome also varies widely between species; for example, the population compared between rabbits and cats looks very different. In recent years, scientists have been heavily focused on this topic which as led to more and more discoveries of the processes, functions, and pathways that the microbiome plays a role in and influences. Processes including fiber digestion, immune system health, pathogen colonization, inflammation, mood regulation, and many others have all been linked to the microbiome. Research in humans, dogs, and cats continues to highlight ways in which the microbiome contributes to numerous physiological pathways. Unfortunately, microbiome research is far less bountiful in exotic species. What Are Prebiotics and Probiotics? Vita drops for rabbits add a reliable nutritional supplement to the pet's dry diet. These feature formulated diets explicitly tailored with your furry friend in mind, ensuring they get all necessary nutrients without having any adverse side effects from bland old food! This vitamin supplement for your bunny can help with both aspects of their health by ensuring an appropriate amount per day, as well as providing these essential nutrients in one easy-to-use supplement form. But I alo read: “Yogurt or dairy products should never be fed to rabbits, for the following reasons: Only at the end of the century the role of gut flora and the protective function of bacteria against pathogens were cleared and some fermented foods were considered probiotic products due to the presence of one or more probiotic bacteria [ 12].
