Spelling is an important skill that children need to develop so they can become effective communicators. There are lots of ways that you can encourage this in the classroom, like the ones we've listed below: Get crafty: Mixing materials and breaking out the craft supplies is a great way to make spelling practise fun and creative at home. You can practise spellings with paint and learn about suffixes in a sandpit to get a hands-on learning experience.

But I think we can all agree we all want our students to be strong spellers! Spelling is important! It is related to reading. If students can spell well, they will read well.It’s related to writing. When students spell well they can focus on communicating their ideas, rather than worrying about how to construct words. Wow! What an exhaustive list! With all of these awesome spelling games and activities, there will never be a dull spelling moment again, right?! 😉Hardly any words in the English origin end in 'j', 'v' or 'u'. There are some exceptions - see if you can think of any! Provide a new word for students to spell, starting with the next student in the line (or circle). If the student cannot think of a letter or says the wrong letter, they are out and must sit down. Now, you should be all set with plenty of ways to practise spellings in the classroom or at home. Remember: mastery of spelling doesn't happen overnight. Try using these strategies regularly to keep up spelling practice with children. How to teach spelling to KS1 children at home Encourage your child to have a go at spelling new words they encounter. If you're reading a book together, for example, and you come across an unfamiliar word, have them write it down in a word bank. This will help to improve their vocabulary too. If your child’s teacher has provided spelling words for your child, you can simply type those words into the word box and select which worksheet you would like to create. The word lists are made by spelling rules and include several words that follow that rule. Spelling lists do not go by grade level until your child has mastered all of the spelling rules. Some children will master the spelling rules sooner than others, so until then, use the spelling assessment to see which rules your child needs to work on and select from the pre-made lists. You should select which words on the list fit your child’s needs and delete the others – they are only there for ideas.

As I said earlier, it’s thought a child needs to write a word 15 times until they really remember it. This doesn’t mean 15 times over and over again, but the more times that word is written, the more likely it is they’ll remember it. It will be in their muscle memory. Write their spelling out large for them and get them to trace over it in the colours of the rainbow.
