About this deal

And while you may think that’s a lot of sachets for a single house kettle, you’ll be glad to hear that Oust’s descaling sachets are multi-purpose and can clean showerheads and irons too. The bulk-buy option is also very reasonably priced.

Per our previous comments, we’d also like to point out that if you live in an exceptionally hard-water area, then even a high-quality anti-lime-scale kettle may not be enough to eliminate lime-scale from your water. You may therefore want to consider filtering your water twice, e.g. once through a water softener or filter jug and then once through the kettle and/or regularly descaling your kettle. By the end of the treatment your kettle should be free from limescale, running more efficiently, and have a longer lifespan. And if you’ve rinsed the kettle out properly, you won’t taste any descaler either! You can also use bottled lemon juice (but not lemon squash!) if you don’t have a lemon handy – add a couple of tablespoons to the kettle in place of the lemon slices, and, again, top up the water to cover the area affected by limescale. Boil and cool the water twice, then rinse the kettle thoroughly to avoid any lingering taste of lemon affecting the next few rounds of drinks. If this doesn’t shift the limescale either increase the ratio of lemon to water, or try an alternative solution. How to remove limescale using vinegar For a hassle-free and cheap way to descale a kettle, fill it with a mixture of half white vinegar and half water, and leave to soak overnight. (Make sure the kettle is unplugged and there's a note on it so nobody uses it accidentally!) In the morning, the limescale will come off easily. Rinse thoroughly to remove any lingering vinegary odours, and boil up fresh water after the treatment. The water will start to fizz immediately and this is the start of the descaling process. After a few minutes, or when the fizzing stops, you can empty the kettle and re-fill it with clean water.Similarly, if you use your kettle many times a day, your kettle may be plagued by more limescale, in comparison to a kettle that’s used once a day. But generally, the stainless steel wire is pretty much solid and isn’t prone to breakage. Besides, you ought to regularly wash your descaler ball under running water, so this should assure you that no unwanted bits and pieces will go to the water you will be drinking. How Long Can You Use a Descaler Ball? You get eight seven-gram sachets in one tub, and although these sachets are some of the most expensive ones around, you don’t have to use them too often. There are three main ways to naturally descale a kettle, allowing you to avoid using harsh chemicals. You could use white vinegar, baking powder, or lemon juice. For all three options, you need to mix these ingredients with water and boil your kettle as normal. Then, rinse it out and boil it again to ensure that it’s clean.

In addition to this, not cleaning a kettle effectively, or often enough, can also lead to limescale build-ups. According to the manufacturer, this has a “double-action filter”. We’ve absolutely no idea how this works in practice, but we can confirm that this anti-lime-scale kettle really does seem to do a great job of filtering the water. Moderate hardness water: If you have moderate hardness water, it's a good idea to descale your electric kettle every 2-3 months. This should be sufficient to prevent a heavy buildup of mineral deposits. This natural solution doesn’t rely on any chemicals, so it’s both kind to the environment and inexpensive. Thinly slice a lemon and drop the slices into your kettle. Fill the kettle to the top of the area affected by limescale (but not above any maximum fill guide, or below any minimum), then boil it and allow it to cool without pouring out the water or removing the lemons. Once it has cooled, boil it again, allow to cool, then pour away the water and rinse it out.

What Causes Limescale Build-Up in Kettles?

They say that prevention is better than the cure, but it’s impossible to avoid limescale completely. However, there are ways that you can reduce this limescale build-up in your kettle. We should say up front that although this hard-water kettle looks like it is made out of stainless steel, it’s actually constructed from plastic, so if that puts you off, then you may want to head straight down to some of our other options. We’d say that if you follow the instructions and boil the kettle a few times before using the water, you should be fine. Visually, we have to say, this anti-lime-scale kettle has a very premium appearance even though its price is very budget-friendly.
