About this deal

Asbestos is generally divided into two sub-groups; serpentine and amphiboles. Serpentine asbestos (chrysotile or white asbestos) was the most commonly used type of asbestos. System buildings (for example using the CLASP method) constructed during the period 1945 to 1980 were widely used for the building of school premises. Common parts, eg foyer, lift, stairs, lobby, boiler and plant room, roof space, communal yard, garden, store rooms, bike shelter, external outbuilding. Refresher awareness could be given as e-learning or as part of other health and safety updates, rather than through a formal training course. For example, an employer, manager or supervisor who has attended an awareness course and who is competent to do so, could deliver an update or safety talk to employees in house.

if you are unsure about whether certain materials contain asbestos, you should presume they do and treat them as such Clarification on the requirements for information, instruction and training including the position on certification and refresher training The risk register can be kept as a paper or electronic record and it is very important that this is kept up to date and easily accessible. Paper copies may be easier to pass on to visiting maintenance workers, who will need them to know the location and condition of any asbestos before they start work. Electronic copies are easier to update and are probably better suited for people responsible for large numbers of properties or bigger premises.Workers who plan to carry out work that will disturb asbestos require a higher level of information, instruction and training, in addition to asbestos awareness. This should take account of whether the work is non-licensed; notifiable non-licensed work (NNLW); or licensed work and should be job specific. Non-licensable work, including Notifiable Non-licensed Work (NNLW)

Many training providers issue trainees with certificates. A certificate is not proof of competency to do the job, but where issued, a certificate shows the individual has had training and may be kept as part of an individuals training record. Where training certificates are provided they sometimes have an expiry date (eg after a year). Expiry does not always mean that 'full' retraining is mandatory, as a result. Record keeping - licensable and non-licensable work with asbestos Chrysotile asbestos fibres are soft, flexible and curved and far less hazardous than the amphibole type.People who believe they may have been exposed to asbestos are understandably anxious and concerned about the possible effects on their health. Many cases of inadvertent, short-term exposure to asbestos will most likely have led to minimal exposure to fibres, with little likelihood of any long-term ill health effects. HSG251: Fumigation: Health and safety guidance for employers and technicians carrying out fumigation operations

Guest accommodation and common parts, (eg foyer, lift, stairs, circulation areas), store rooms, roof space, outbuildings.
