About this deal

To date, there are no peer-reviewed studies into the effects of microbial collagen on skin health and appearance. What’s more, expert opinions are divided.

Shake well. Use alone or add a dropperful to your favorite moisturizer before bed, or anytime you need an extra boost. Apply to clean skin. Today, it seems like there's a plant-based version for just about everything, but finding a suitable alternative for your collagen supplements is surprisingly challenging—despite the fact that it's a vital protein source for our bodies—and one that we produce less and less of as we age. Case in point? Vegan collagen. Some products have been around for a few years, mostly in ingestible form, and now there are a couple of skin- and hair-care options, but what exactly is it? Does it work the same way as its non-vegan counterparts?Because actual vegan collagen is hard to come by, and is currently quite expensive to produce, a lot of brands offer collagen boosters instead. “Collagen boosters are mixtures of vitamins, minerals, plant extracts and/or herbs that help promote and support our body’s own collagen production,” says Doyle. These are commonly found in supplement or powder form, meant to be ingested as a capsule or mixed in with smoothies and drinks. While animal-derived collagen provides collagen directly from the source, vegan alternatives can still have value. “Since plant-based collagen supplements cannot provide the body with a direct source of collagen—it can only promote the body’s production of it—it is generally considered less effective,” explains Dr. Engelman. “The blend of antioxidants, minerals, and amino acids makes a healthy supplement for your body, but it will not have as strong of an effect as animal-derived collagen since its efficacy depends on your body’s ability to take the collagen-stimulating ingredients and actually produce collagen with them (which depends on factors like age and individual metabolism).”

Thanks to scientific developments, vegan collagen is functionally equivalent to the animal collagen that is used in skin care. “Collagen can now be made by using genetically modified yeast and bacteria sources,” explains Doyle. “Vegan collagen is made by adding human genes that produce collagen to the microbial genetic structure, which leads to production of collagen components by the yeast or bacteria. A digestive enzyme called pepsin is also added to assist with placing the collagen components into actual collagen molecules.” Unlike animal-derived collagen, plant-based collagen supplements (also known as ‘collagen promoters’) do not provide a direct source of collagen to the body,” notes Dr. Dendy Engelman, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. “Instead, they are made up of ingredients that promote the body’s natural production of collagen—usually silica, phytoceramides, amino acids, minerals, and antioxidants—especially vitamin C—since the human body naturally uses vitamin C to produce collagen.” Vegan Collagen: Our patented fermented plant-peptide that adds rich hydration to leave skin looking dewy and fresh WimpernAnwendung: Für einen natürlichen Look eine Schicht auftragen. Weitere Schichten erhöhen die Intensität. Für die unteren Wimpern die Bürstenspitze verwenden.Scientists are particularly interested in utilizing Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. Studies have shown this particular strain of bacteria can produce enough collagen to be commercially viable. Initially working with an aromatherapist-come-crystal healer, Brooke Harvey Taylor takes a holistic approach to the beauty industry. Using plant-powered but highly effective ingredients, Pacifica Beauty has both the planet and its inhabitants at its core. As such, it has been granted Provenance Proof Points and is verified as being 100% vegan and cruelty-free! Dr. Ava Shamban, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Ava MD Dermatology, explains that the chemical composition of collagen is the same across all species, consisting of three different amino acids that form a triple helix. “Today, using recombinant technology, we can have the same triple-helix amino acid sequence engineered that mirrors the sequence found in human- (or animal-) tissue-derived collagen, thus creating vegan collagen.” Currently, this technology is only used in formulating topical products and not in ingestibles.

We use vegan collagen proteins produced through a plant-based fermentation process that uses zero animal inputs while demonstrating its equivalence to animal-derived collagens through structural, biochemical, physical and biological properties. Here, expert-recommended products that can help spark collagen production t0 reduce wrinkles and skin sagging and even improve the structure of our bones and our bodies' ability to heal from an injury. Although you may not be able to find pure collagen that isn’t animal-derived, you can boost your own collagen production from within by using plant-based ingredients. Regardless of molecule size, however, it still has the same moisturizing benefits of topical animal collagen, which can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, at least temporarily. “Even if not penetrable, it still has the humectant benefits, and in this case it’s more a result of the structure of the collagen, not the size,” says Shamban. But does it work? According to Vanessa Thomas, cosmetic chemist and founder of Freelance Formulations, it’s too new and too rare to really know just yet, but because it’s so similar in structure to animal collagen, Doyle says that it likely would have the same issue of being too large a molecule to penetrate the skin. However, Tyler Moore, social media manager of vegan beauty brand Truly, says that vegan collagen molecules are smaller than animal-based, making it actually capable of penetrating the top layer of the skin.Created in 1996, this vegan and cruelty-free brand has been within the beauty-sphere for a very long time. Dreamt up by Brook Harvey-Taylor, Pacifica was born out of her obsession with creating ‘good-for-you' beauty products. Beginning with essential-oil-infused concoctions the founder discovered in her kitchen, the brand has gone on to develop a wide range of must have beauty staples across hair care, skin care, and body care heroes. Still, collagen made from genetically modified yeast and bacteria could be considered vegan as it doesn’t involve cruelty towards animals. This technique is relatively new, but thanks to recent advances, using microbes to produce vegan collagen may soon become more commonplace.

Meet Our Experts: Tricia Pingel, ND, a naturopathic physician, Trinty Mouzon Wofford, co-founder and CEO of Golde, Dendy Engleman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City Multiusage : Protège la peau contre les effets du soleil. While we see it in many anti-aging skin-care products, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Amanda Doyle explains that it’s not as effective as it’s claimed to be—at least not in the way we might think. “Topical collagen never took off because of its large molecular weight, which makes it too large for it to penetrate effectively into the skin,” she says. However, because topical collagen is a great humectant, it’s an effective moisturizer that can improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles and is still widely used in skin care.Because vegan collagen is formed from healthful plant-based ingredients, the benefits extend well beyond collagen production, too. In fact, according to Dr. Pingel, it can strengthen joints, muscles, and bones, increase energy, support the immune system, improve seasonal allergy symptoms, improve sleep, reduce anxiety, protect the liver, support wound healing, and of course, help slow the signs of aging—just to name a few. A 2015 study revealed that the vitamin C found in vegan collagen sources significantly induced collagen synthesis in women of all ages, but especially in those under age 50,” Dr. Pingel notes. Collagen is one of the most abundant and important structural proteins found in our body. It makes up the connective tissues found in our bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments and is responsible for our skin’s strength and elasticity. Our bodies naturally produce it, but it begins to deplete by the time we hit our mid-20s, hence the popularity of ingesting supplements and applying topical products formulated with it. Traditionally, this collagen is derived from animal sources. Considering that collagen products can be beneficial to our skin, is it better to ingest them with dietary sources or apply them topically?
