About this deal

There were no executions scheduled, nor expected. After the liberation of Amiens, the RAF Squadron Leader Edwin Houghton was sent there with the specific task to find the cause for Jericho, but he failed to find even the alleged list of executions to be carried out. Operation Jericho had been described by a military writer as an expression of confidence and clinical planning not witnessed hitherto fore in the Indian subcontinent. Brigadier Rustom Zal Kabraji led ground operations to clear rebel-held positions. He commanded the 61 Mountain Brigade based in Agartala. Caldwell, Donald L. (1998). JG 26 War Diary: 1943–1945. Smith was appointed commanding officer of 151 squadron in February 1942 and acting wing commander in April, when 151 squadron began converting to the potent Mosquito-II night-fighter. On the night of June 24/25, he shot down two German bombers and damaged a third off Yarmouth. He was awarded a bar to his DFC in July, having scored eight aerial kills and four damaged. Having spent more than 2 years flying operationally with 151 squadron, he was rested from operations in March 1943. Mizoram, nestled in the northeastern part of India, had been marred by insurgency and separatist movements for years. The Mizo National Front (MNF), led by Laldenga, was at the forefront of the secessionist movement, demanding an independent state of Mizoram. The region had become a hotbed of insurgency, leading to significant unrest and challenges for the Indian government. Operation Jericho Timeline

The central government’s decision to station additional Assam Rifles battalions in the region sparked outrage and led to the launch of ‘Operation Jericho’ by MNF. Despite efforts to resupply the Assam Rifles battalion via helicopters, rebel resistance led to the shooting down of some supply missions.

The turning point came with the Mizoram Peace Accord of 1986, a pivotal agreement reached between the government and the MNF (Mizo National Front), which laid the groundwork for consequential constitutional changes. Citation reads: This officer has completed a very large number of operational missions and achieved much success. By his outstanding leadership, exceptional ability and fine fighting qualities, he has contributed in a large measure to the high standard of morale of the squadron he commands. The rebels besieged the headquarters of 1 Assam Rifles, released prisoners, looted arms and funds, and declared independence. April 29, 1966: The MNFF transformed into the Mizo National Front (MNF) under Laldenga’s leadership. Its objective shifted from famine relief to achieving Mizo self-determination and secession from India. No one had imagined that the Union government would bomb its own territory. “It took us by surprise that the government had the courage to deploy jet fighters to bomb Aizawl that it dared not fly inside China or Pakistan,” said Remruata, a village council member. “Well, charity begins at home.” Clifford, Chris; Beebee, Steve, eds. The bombing caused colossal destruction with some reports saying Aizawl town had caught fire. Fortunately, only 13 civilians were killed. Eighty-seven had died in the bombing and received a mass funeral carefully orchestrated by the French authorities. Predictably, the tame French press fulminated at the British, carefully parroting the party line that the raid was a crime. The funeral was a sad time, but even it had its bright side, for in the cortege of one of the dead, six wanted men walked piously away from the convent where they had been hidden.

Later that year he led the squadron of Whitley bombers that carried paratroopers to their drop for the Bruneval raid. [2] Thomas, C. (2010). Typhoon Wings of 2nd TAF 1943–45. Though the state of Mizoram was formed in 1987 after the Union government and the Mizo National Front signed the Mizoram Peace Accord, today, Zo nationalism – an ideological formulation of Zo peoples fragmented by the process of decolonisation and spread across India, Myanmar and Bangladesh – continues to assert itself.

Attempts were made to re-supply the Assam Rifles battalion with helicopters, but these were shot at by the Mizo rebels. Initially, the IAF focused on re-supplying army installations using Dakotas and Caribou transport aircraft from Guwahati and Jorhat. In response to this deployment, the leadership of the MNF devised a bold plan known as ‘Operation Jericho.’ Their objective was to seize control of Aizawl, the largest town in the area, and ultimately, the entire Mizo Hills. It was named after the biblical story of Jericho, a city whose walls fell after the Israelites’ long, strategic siege.
