About this deal

Loved the plot. 100% loved the plot and it saved this whole book for me. It was SO refreshing to read a 100% YA romance novel. It has all the tropes, but they’re completely twisted in a way I’ve never seen before. I thought I knew what I was getting into when I started this book, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. There was plot-twist after plot-twist and it definitely kept me on my toes. The friendship turning into a fake-dating scheme between Zara and Adnan was absolutely LOVELY, from beginning to end. It’s cristal clear how close they are, how much they know and care for each other. I loved loved LOVED their bond, their banter and everything else about them. I also really enjoyed exploring Zara’s family relationships, and loved that unlike most YA novels, her parents were just present enough in the narrative to know they existed (and there to support her if necessary) without being too involved to make their inclusion seem unrealistic. I also really liked their positive and rather candid approach to sex (and the ‘sex talk’). Zara is a big romance fan and reading and discussing films with her friends, but she and her best friend Adnan are getting heat from their parents who are desperate for them to get together. Then suddenly they have to pretend to to protect Adnan’s new girlfriend from family issues. As Zara and Adnan grow closer, is there a point at which they should try to give love an actual chance?

Zara loves love in all forms: 90s romcoms and romance novels and grand sweeping gestures. And she's desperate to have her own great love story. Crucially, a realone. So when her best friend Adnan begs her to pretend to date him to cover up his new top-secret relationship, Zara is hesitant. This isn't the kind of thing she had in mind. But there's something in it for Zara too: making her parents, who love Adnan, happy might just stop them arguing for a while. She may not be getting her own love story, but she could save theirs.I found the detailed Pokemon Go thread, which formed a lot of one part of the plot, a bit much, kind of old-fashioned where the rest of the book didn’t seem to be trying to be, and it was annoying that Zara didn’t have enough oomph to stand up for herself a bit more. Adnan’s girlfriend Cami’s arc was a bit melodramatic in the end, and it was a shame that girls ended up pitted against each other. I didn’t manage to care for Cami, one of the main character and the entire reason behind the fake-dating scheme, which made me a bit sad. I had a hard time understanding her and, even by the end of the story, I guess I just maybe, wanted to know a bit more about her. From start to finish it’s hard not to find these two so endearing. Though their actions may have been crazy, they were carried out with good intentions. Problems arise, but welcome to see the importance of being true to yourself and not being over concerned with keeping others happy. While both Zara and Adnan insist that will never happen — they’re close friends, that’s it — the tide turns when Adnan needs to cover-up his real girlfriend and begs Zara to pretend they’re an item. How hard can it be? Very, as things turn out. First up, there’s a whole lot of practical issues around how they behave towards each other, and around Adnan’s actual girlfriend. Then there’s jealousy, and the problem of Zara falling for someone for real. With a fun meta-fiction vibe (a romcom about romcom with entertaining romcom twists), the besties-to-couple trope is thrust to the fore from the off: “that’s literally how every YA romcom starts. Boy and girl are besties, they get involved in a fake dating scheme and then BAM they get together for real.” Zara and Adnan are justfriends. Always have been, always will be. Even if they have to pretend to be girlfriend and boyfriend...

Zara is such a sweetheart. she’s an avid bookworm and romcom enjoyer (like myself) who wants to have her own experience with the type of love she reads about and sees everyday. she’s very real and is in no way perfect but i think that is what i like the most about her. she cares so much about the people in her life and would do anything to make them happy (even if it puts her own happiness at risk) her relationship with her parents was so beautiful and i loved reading about them and watching their relationship grow together. overall, i feel this book is a really fun contemporary YA novel that has really relatable and enjoyable/ likeable characters. it’s a great story and i would definitely recommend! So Zara agrees and the act begins: after all, how different can pretending to be in a relationship with your best friend be to just hanging around with them like usual? Turns out, a lot. With fake dating comes fake hand-holding and fake kissing and real feelings... And when a new boy turns up in Zara's life, things get more confusing than ever.

Choose a category that works for your book and an audience that will enjoy it. Otherwise, your efforts will be wasted and possibly cause you to go to the spam folder. Having a romance fan (both of books and movies) as a main character really added a little extra something to this story. We definitely see how expectations clash with reality, how everything Zara builds up in her head doesn’t end up happening as planned, because, well, life isn’t a perfect rom-com. I absolutely LOVED THIS! And love how Hussain cleverly explores the complex and often unpredictable nature of relationships whilst perfectly capturing the essence of love in all its many forms. All of which leaves readers expecting that very thing to happen to Zara and Adnan. Cue much confusion and soul-searching realisations on the path to heart-stirring happiness. Only promote your work in the promotion categories, which will be clearly labeled by genre. Failing to follow this rule won't make you many friends. Sorry.
