About this deal

It’s no secret that my book of last year (and probably EVER!) is We Begin at the End by Chris Whitaker. The book broke my heart into a million pieces and will remain with me forever. I heartily recommend everyone reads it. And I’m not the only fan as it was also the runaway winner of #R3COMM3ND3D2020, Thriller of the Month at Waterstones and it recently won the CWA Gold Dagger. But we’re not here to talk about WBatE! We’re here to talk about Whitaker’s stunning new YA novel, The Forevers. Chris excels at writing memorable teenage characters in his adult fiction so his first YA novel was a thoroughly exciting prospect and one I couldn’t wait to read! The sense of time running out, and the brutal psychological impact of knowing that the end is nigh, is masterfully evoked in all its heart-stopping starkness, while the dynamics between the young adult characters are authentically realised. All in all, this near-dystopian thriller has thought-provoking bite. Mae is tough as nails, delightfully sarcastic and does not care about what others think. The people she does care for, she does fiercely and deeply. She feels like the calm before the storm. A person you would want in your corner when the going gets tough. For example, for most of the book Sally is pretty much only ever referred to in terms of her weight. She’s the fat girl. She‘s almost always consuming copious amounts of food whenever we see her. She’s fat shamed. A lot. When I finally learned something else about her, I wanted an entire book dedicated to her. There’s so much complexity and emotion there, and it felt like I only just scraped the surface of who she was. The main thing that let the book down was that there were various scenes, with various characters, some of which were very engaging and well described, but it was SO disjointed. The book would jump from one scene to another and I would be lost entirely, trying to work out the point at which the characters had got from scene A to scene B with no preamble. New characters would appear and indicate that Mae, Felix or another lead character was now in fact somewhere else but that would be our only clue.I have loved everything Chris Whitaker has written, but here he departs from his usual fare, focusing on YA in this pre-apocalyptic novel set a month prior to the destruction of the earth. 10 years previously, NASA's Juan Martin Morales identified Asteroid 8050XF11, named Selena, was set on a path for our planet, but optimistically it was thought that disaster could be averted. However, every attempt has met with failure and with not long to go, people are going off the rails, there are riots and suicides, amidst the fear, panic and terror, and the stark awareness there is nothing more to be done. Impoverished 17 year old Margaret 'Mae' Cassidy lost her parents when she was 10, and had to grow up pretty sharpish, having to take care of her prematurely born blind sister, Stella and her grandmother. She is responsible for providing for all of them, breaking into houses and stealing what she can. a b "Suspect arrested in deadly movie theater shooting in Southern California". EW.com. Mae and Abi were once best friends, creating The Forevers, with matching tattoos on their wrists denoting their togetherness in the world. A doomsday scenario may seem like infertile territory for comedy but Whitaker could find humour in a colonoscopy - it's just a question of assembling the right characters and using his remarkable eye for detail to exploit the possibilities. He can also do pathos, tragedy, intrigue and high drama which sort of makes you want to hate the guy. I'm sorry that I don't have better things to say about The Forevers. I love the cover and I definitely found the blurb appealing but as it spun out, the plot was very difficult to like. When the end of the world is definitely coming in 30 days, this small community was pretty wrapped up in the death of Abi, not the big impending asteroid. That seemed a little out of kilter with my expectations.

It's also a very heavy read, not just because there's so much social commentary about mortality. The story also has bullying, rape, parental abuse, domestic violence, suicide, murder, self-harm and more. Again, I would like to have known beforehand. Chris Whitaker sensitively handles many disturbing themes throughout this novel. As Selena hurtles towards earth, the adults are attempting normality by sending their children off to school, going to work and generally continuing with their day. It’s almost like they are in complete denial, always hopeful that the scientists can fix this. The teenage community has had no life beyond Selena. They will now never see adulthood and are more accepting of their fate. This is it…..Personaje îndrăznețe, fiecare cu probleme în familie sau de personalitate, învăluite în secrete, terminate și dubioase…acestea formau Eternii și au avut curajul de a-și găsi Eternitatea și a-și înfrunta temerile, că doar vine sfârșitul lumii, ce mai ai de pierdut? The Forevers is a YA novel that centres on human civilisation coming to an end. An asteroid is spotted and is set to destroy the world within 30 days. The novel follows a 17-year-old girl, Mae, who grows up during this societal emergency. I found the overall plot to be simple and easy to follow, but the ideas discussed are very complex and interesting. We made Forever for the creeps and the weirdos, the freaks and the outlaws. Content warnings include abortion, addiction, alcoholism, bullying, death by suicide, domestic abuse, fat shaming, homophobia, mental health, overdose, physical abuse, self harm, sexual assault, slut shaming and suicidal ideation .

The Forevers has a huge cast list but my personal favourites were the feisty Mae and the hapless but ultimately indomitable Felix who managed to turn most of my adolescent insecurities into personal triumphs. Scott, Ryan (August 1, 2019). "The Purge 5 Gets TV Director Behind Luke Cage & Snowpiercer Series". MovieWeb. Archived from the original on December 10, 2019 . Retrieved July 2, 2020. If I ever took the time and trouble to create a list of my all-time favourite novels, I'm pretty sure 'We Begin At The End' would feature in the top ten. I love Chris Whitaker's writing and this first venture into YA was entirely predictable for anyone who has read his previous novels. If you loved Manny, Raine and Duchess, you'd expect him to make the leap with no trouble at all . . . and you'd be right! I didn't care about the characters - they were pretty whiny, unlikeable and unrelatable to me (though I understand I'm not the target audience). Mae lives with her grandmother who is suffering from dementia and her younger sister, Stella, who was born blind following a tragic accident that took the lives of Mae’s parents. Mae has suffered untold pain but with grit and determination, she keeps going. What choice does she have? But for others the truth is too much and life is no longer worth living. When Abi Manton’s body is discovered by Mae at the bottom of a cliff, the obvious questions are asked. Did she jump? Or was she pushed? And does anyone really care?
