About this deal

Measurement disclaimer: Testing flashlights is my hobby. I use hobbyist-level equipment for testing, including some I made myself. Try not to get buried in the details of manufacturer specifications versus measurements recorded here; A certain amount of difference (say, 10 or 15%) is perfectly reasonable. What’s Included What better way to start 2020 than a post about the RovyVon A28 Flashlight. It has a clear body and secondary emitters – red and UV. My emitter of choice is the Nichia 219c, which is High CRI (90+). The other option is a Cree XP-L. The emitter is under a TIR optic, which I think has seen some changes since the A23 review – see the beamshots of the two for comparison purposes. A23 beamshot link.

Needs a 1 or sub-lumen mode for main LED, red lantern, and white lantern. It's just a bit too bright inside a tent, especially with a partner.

2 year warranty

Moonlight seems to be momentary only – there isn’t a way to get to it in the main group as far as I can see I already know I like this series of lights – I reviewed the A23 here, which is a very similar light. I liked the A23 enough to buy my own brass version – the A29. So the A28 is one I’m already probably going to like, and after the review work, I like it as expected. I wish the low was lower though. That’s my biggest complaint. Long Review The Big Table RovyVon A28

Micro USB instead of USB-C. Also the dust cover eventually disappeared so it would be nice if it was more sturdy, this may have prevented the washing machine from killing it, who knows. Almost all flashlights that are sold are made of aluminum, at least most of the lights worth talking about. You know what material Rovyvon doesn’t offer in the 3rd Generation Aurora series? Aluminum. I’m not going to complain about that, I like to see things get switched up. The materials offered are polyamide, stainless steel, titanium, GITD (glow in the dark) polycarbonate, and clear polycarbonate. Being the A5, this model happens to be the GITD Green polycarbonate version. The bezel, though, is stainless steel. Lux was measured by a UNI-T UT383 BT at 5 meters. Lumens were measured in a homemade lumen tube using a TSL2591 sensor, calibrated with a Maukka calibration light. The temperature was monitored with a MLX90614 IR temperature sensor. Lumen measurements That’s different from the original too, which had a much bigger and fairly prouder switch. I have no complaints about the upgrade, except I wish they’d thrown a metal (or at least hard) switch cover on there. The Aurora A8 keychain flashlight has now reached the 2nd generation - The RovyVon Aurora A8x. With the optimized driver and almost 3 times the battery capacity, the Aurora A8x can last up to 70 hours at ultra-low mode (3 lumens), and the PWM has been greatly improved over the original RovyVon range. The runtime for high and medium follow. Output doesn’t hit the claim when considered to FL1 standards, but at initial output the specs are met. (Also the modes are labeled “Turbo” and “High” below, but I think it’s clear what’s going on.) I would have really liked a Moonlight shortcut.Other than that, I can live with this for a keychain light There are two different versions of the Rovyvon A8x, the difference being the Aux LEDs. One has amber, red, and blue LEDs. The sample I have is the “UV” model which has UV, red, and neutral white aux LEDs.It’s great to have the option of a neutral white LED.It’s unfortunately not high CRI, but is pleasant nonetheless.I’ve found that the super floody, side-firing, neutral white LED is pretty handy for nighttime reading and low-light table-top illumination.Measurements for the white aux LED are: Beam shots of the building are taken at 15 m (16 yd) using a Pixel 6 set to ISO 200 with 1/10 second exposure time.

My review copy has Nichia 219c, which is a high CRI variant. I’m very pleased this is an option both because I’d prefer the high CRI (90+) and also I think XP-G3 is just really, really bad. So I have Nichia, and I think you’ll be happier with it too.

5-star service

So… yeah, it’s definitely cold white. But at least the tint is neutral and the DUV actually registered as negative (slightly pinkish) though nearly perfectly on the BBL.

Main LED Very High (450 lumen, 90mins)- Way brighter than I was expecting, definitely brighter than any other light I've owned. Only capable of I think 100sec of use before stepping down brightness due to heat, but honestly it's too bright except for investigating strange noises in the dark. A nice feature for sure but I rarely use it for more than a few seconds at a time. IP66 "equivalent" leaves something to be desired. The washing machine is a bit of a torture test for it, but seeing that it is so small it's not hard to imagine that this scenario happens all the time so it would be nice if it was more waterproof.Using and carrying this light is awesome. It’s compact and light weight, while outputting enough light for everything I have used it for. The only negative with this light for me is the Amber auxiliary LED — it’s too bright and completely useless. I would get the UV model if I were to do it again as I have to think that it would be slightly more useful with the low white side light. Overall Fully charges in about an hour, maybe a bit more, 330mah internal battery is trivial to recharge off any battery bank. Also it can be used while charging if needed. I compare everything to the Killzone 219b BLF-348 because it’s inexpensive and has the best tint! Conclusion What I like
