About this deal

Note: not all Momentums are ECE certified – so at the time of writing, you can only buy the Lite, Momentum and Evo in the UK/Eu.

The shell is made from glass, and other organic, fibres. It makes for a strong but energy-absorbent shell. The aerodynamic scoops and stabilisers remain from the X-Spirit 3, though they’re reshaped around the bottom to better cut through the air. The Sena Smartphone App works on Apple and Android devices. It contains guides on how to use your headset as well as configure its settings. There’s also a Sena Camera App which lets you configure settings as well as preview live video and manage recorded videos and connects to the camera with WiFi. Companion Apps control all the usual settings and contain the manuals All of which means, you can expect it to give you the right levels of protection whether on a circuit or on the roads. Helmet Noise (more about helmet noise) Some open-face helmets have a drop-down sunshield that helps protect the eyes, but wind will typically still whip up under these at speed. Really, you’ll need to buy a pair of goggles to wear with an open-face lid. You’ll find a ‘J’ on the label, indicating that it’s homologated as a ‘jet’, or open-face helmet. The downside is that the C3 Pro/ E1 are not light helmets in the way that off road helmets are. We also know from personal experience that the sand and mud that are often a feature of a big off-road adventure can wreak havoc with a flip-front’s complicated lifting mechanism. That same mud and sand can also interfere with the mechanism of the drop-down sun visor. A poorly fitting helmet may not only be uncomfortable, more noisy and may move around when riding if too big or give headaches etc if it is too small, it is also dangerous. A helmet simply will not protect or perform as designed if the head inside it is not snuggly fitted against the impact absorbing material inside the shell. It’s a sign of the times that the helmet meets the newer ECE 22.06 standard for road use, along with the FIM approval required for international road racing events. The Momentum Evo has a later Sena 30K Mesh 2 intercom and bluetooth 4.1. Mesh is a system of connectivity for headsets and allows connection with up to 24 riders and up to 5 miles range.

Essentially the same helmet as the Momentum Lite but with a more advanced bluetooth headset included. It’ll let you connect with up to 7 other riders and allows audio multitasking for simultaneous GPS instructions while listening to music, for example. Same 1 mile max headset range – equivalent to Sena’s 20S standalone heatsets. DOT and ECE helmets. Sena Momentum INC complete with ALL tags in place, helmet bag, manual, protective plastic on visor and any other associated parts supplied. Both helmets take spectacles fine, the frames of mine not being distorted or causing the bridge to lift off my nose, but another surprise with the Schuberth was that I had to go up from my usual medium to a large. I’ve worn all three versions of the X-Spirit series over the years and each sequel has been slightly better than the previous. That improvement continues with this X-SPR Pro, which takes the idea of the race helmet and moves it on that little bit further. As soon as I slip the lid onto my head, I instantly feel snug and safe. It wraps around with familiarity, as someone who is used to the feel of a full-face helmet. Fox claims the Small/Medium is 460g, and considering its beefy build, this is surprisingly lightweight. It feels light to wear too, which you want for fast and technical riding. The helmet utilises MIPS's impact protection system, lined with an impressive structure offering traditional protection within its shell makeup. Fox uses a dual-density EPS foam called Varizorb™, which combines two densities of foam arranged to interlace one another for added strength. The hole on the right is where air comes into the helmet via the brow vent. The hole on the left is covered by the ‘bunny ears’ that can be released from under the front of the headlining. For context, I’ve always found Arais to be comfortable (since starting riding in 1996). For about the past ten years Shoeis have been fine, and about half the Shark range works for me. There are lots of other lids that fit a treat, but the point is that not everything suits everybody. Warning: I’m not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. You should ask a local lawyer to make sure everything is completely legal as countries and states have different laws. Do it at your own risk.

Of course, there’s more to helmet safety than just the shell and impact protection. And again, the Shoei X-SPR Pro should pretty well offer most of what you need. You can see what they thought were the best helmets in our video below, but here are the headline awards: This type of mount is recommended if you want a more practical attachment/detachment process when fixing the camera to your helmet. With this mount, you’re going to velcro-strap the camera to the helmet. That tab, if moved across before lowering the visor, makes it stay open by just a small amount to allow in some airflow. SHELL - In-mold construction: A lightweight PC shell fused with EPS liner to maximize protection and comfort.Once you reach that time using the same mount, you should consider changing it, if you want to be really safe about it. You could test the firmness of the glue simply by trying to move the mount around with your hands. The mount shouldn’t move at all, but if it does, then it’s probably time to change it. Note: you’ll only find the Momentum, Lite and Evo for sale in the UK at the time of writing as they’re the only helmets that have been ECE approved. Overall/Summary If you’re a little bit short on money at the time, the cheapest way to attach your GoPro camera to your helmet safely is with a vented helmet strap mount. If you want to focus on the surface you’re riding/sliding/driving in, then you should also place it front and center, but with the camera looking down. While it’ll allow for listening to music or GPS directions and chatting with other riders, it’s not a mesh system so won’t allow for simultaneous connections – it’s one or the other. DOT and ECE versions made. Sena Momentum

In the Momentum Lite, you’ll get Sena’s bargain basement 10 Series bluetooth. That’s a bluetooth 4.1 intercom with a 1 mile range (in perfect conditions) that’ll connect up to 4 riders. There’s a good deal of online speculation about exactly who makes the helmets for Sena. My money’s on HJC given they’re another Korean brand who manufacture down the road. But I’ve also read that a Malaysian company called MHR might make them – no I’d not heard of them either. The Sena Momentum INC Pro (the one with the noise cancelling and video camera).

The issue is that racers are atheletes and they don’t half work up a sweat when they’re racing. So ventilation is paramount. And where there’s a ton of ventilation holes and wind getting inside the helmet – like there is on the Shoei X-SPR Pro – there’s also going to be a load of noise getting in. I guess most buyers are gonna buy a Sena helmet because they’re looking for that seamless bluetooth integration without all the fiddling we usually have adding bluetooth kits and getting them to work properly. Of course, the problem with this noise is that it’ll depend on your bike and the quality of the screen. Ultimately, a naked bike will see the Schuberth perform exceptionally well, but as soon as you add screen turbulence, the benefits are often lost.
