About this deal

GoPro action cameras do a lot of things well. Battery life is not one of them. Even under ideal circumstances, using video modes that use the least power, the best you can hope for is under two hours for a fully charged battery in the GoPro HERO 4. In real-world use, you’re more likely to get something closer to around one hour. If you leave the wifi on, you’ll get less. If you use the LCD screen, you’ll get a lot less. If your time-lapse shoot spans more than a couple of hours by less than 24 hours or so, there are a few different options. Not all of these will run a full 24 hours, and some can run longer depending on the choice of settings you use.

If you are not recording any video or taking pictures, it would be a good idea to turn the GoPro Hero 4 off, since its standby mode consumes power as well. So, if there is no need for your action cam’s features, then switch it off after use to conserve battery life. Tip #6: Keep the Batteries Warm in Cold Weather Additional mounts and accessories like external microphones etc. require more power of the device. This reduces its battery life and increases charging time as well. So, remove unnecessary mounts and accessories to increase your camera’s battery life. Tip #4: Turn off WiFi Since I originally posted this, these Brunton batteries have become extremely hard to find. That obviously makes them a much less viable option. But I’ll keep this here just in case someone manages to find one. Here are some useful tips to improve the battery life of the GoPro Hero 4: Tip #1: Turn on Auto Power off The previous model, designed for the GoPro HERO3 and HERO3+ models, was weatherproof but wasn’t waterproof and couldn’t be submerged. That’s been upgraded significantly in the new version.

And if 6 hours isn’t enough, they also make larger versions that apparently provide up to 12 and 24 hours of continuous recording. The other thing to contend with is that you’ll need to factor in waterproofing both the camera and the battery. The GoPro waterproof housing isn’t designed to allow external connections. In one of my housings, I’ve drilled a hole in the side to allow a USB cable to be inserted into the camera. When I’ve installed the camera and inserted the cable, I still need to waterproof that hole with silicon sealant gel and duct tape. If you plan for a serious drenching or to be submersible, you’ll have to take extra measures here. So here are some options if you’re looking to shoot time-lapse for longer than a couple of hours. All of these assume you don’t have easy access to AC power and/or need weatherproof protection for the camera. It’s hard to give absolute times for how long these battery solutions will provide because it depends on several things—the camera settings you’re using, the quality and health of the battery, and even the weather conditions (lithium batteries don’t perform well in very cold conditions). Time Lapse Under 24 Hours with a GoPro HERO4 First off, it’s worth clarifying exactly which GoPro cameras the Brunton All Day 2.0 works with, because while it’s compatible with most of the current GoPro range, it’s not compatible with all of them.

This is a product that was released after I originally wrote this post, and I haven’t personally tried it. But now that the Brunton All Day 2.0 is basically impossible to find, this option is interesting and unique enough that I think it’s worth including here. Even adding an extended battery might bring you up to around three hours, but it also means adding weight and bulk. Battery life isn’t a GoPro strong point. So, unless the action you’re shooting is under a couple of hours, you’re going to need to find another solution other than relying on the standard internal battery.

The All Day 2.0 is rated to be waterproof down to a depth of around 130 feet (40 meters), which, not coincidentally, is the depth rating for the housings for the GoPro cameras it’s designed to work with. There’s more than one way to charge GoPro batteries. I’ve included the corresponding external battery charger models in the table above, but the batteries can also be charged directly in the camera (with a USB charger cable). The charger models I’ve listed above are the official ones put out by GoPro, but there are many aftermarket external charger cradles that also work well.
