Delaware and Sturgis have a sobering encounter with an array of homeless people and frustrating interviews with family members. Thank you to Random House Publishing/Ballantine and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review!

Two vans for transporting techs and their gear, meaning lots of scraping and sampling; one for transporting bodies; a Chevy Volt sedan used by coroners’ assistants as they traveled around the county ministering to dead people. No one had told me to glove up but I covered my hand with a corner of my blazer and prepared to nudge. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. This face was narrow, delicately boned, the sweaty skin stretched drum-tight, and it remained still. Homelessness is a significant problem in cities on the US west coast today, and Unnatural History sends our detectives into the slums and camps looking for clues. Some secondary characters from previous books in the series show up to keep things interesting and provide additional awareness of how Milo and his team work together. Milo Sturgis asks psychologist Alex Delaware to work with him for the psychological insights he can bring to this oddball murder. A woman discovers her boyfriend, billionaire’s son Donny Klement, lying in bed with three bullet holes in his chest. The magic combination of Psychologist Alex and tough guy cop Lieutenant Sturgis is enthralling and detailed to perfection about how they always get their criminal apprehended.

Why DMV bothers to record hair color has always mystified me and Melissande Gornick proved my point with a hot-pink, teased-up do. Overall, Unnatural History is an ominous, sophisticated, entertaining tale by Kellerman that has just the right amount of mystery, intrigue, and intensity to keep you engaged from start to finish and leave fans of this incredibly long-running series more than satisfied. While the mystery structure might be time-tested, the locations and suspects are a departure for Kellerman. We learn about Kate’s possibly stalling career and Leo’s plan to apply to acting schools against his mother’s wishes. His latest project involved homeless subjects - people he invited into his studio to dress up as their "dream" person.Their friendship has evolved over the course of this series, and the love and admiration they have for each other is tangible. I found an underlying theme in this book where I suspect Kellerman was attempting to address the problem of homelessness. She’s the newly hired personal assistant to a handsome, wealthy photographer and is ready to greet her boss with coffee and good cheer. The book takes you through the tent city scattered around Los Angeles looking for clues, and we are guests on the journey toward resolution. This begins with the encountering of the hysterical assistant to a wealthy photographer she's just found in bed, quite dead as a result of three bullets.
