About this deal

Because there are over 600 species of enemies available, the data can be broken down by region, family, or current location. When Meron responds rudely to Lessa, Fandarel forcibly removes him, and lets Lessa take his place at the distance-viewer, followed by Sangel and Lord Oterel of Tillek Hold. In the Weyr Bowl, Lessa wonders about what to do with Jaxom, only for a drunken Lytol and Robinton to argue with Raid before falling asleep that Ruth isn't a proper dragon and will likely perish — although Lessa notes Ramoth disagrees — and as such, Jaxom must remain at Ruatha Hold where his obligations will give him a hold on life. One of the basic troubles between Lord Holders and Weyrmen are dragons, F'lar, and those fire lizards might just ease matters. F'lar then tells them of the grubs, leading to a discussion about the Southern Continent, with N'ton musing that it might have been abandoned by the Ancients to allow the grubs to flourish — which also suggests they knew they couldn't go to the Red Star.

It is also true that in Dragonquest we get the first few hints that Pern is changing (something which will be explored later in the series), such as with the efficiency obsessed master Fandarell rather surprising Lessa by noting that women in the smith hall worked on any engineering or design projects they could, or Brekke’s outright question to F’nor as to why a woman could not ride a fighting dragon, a comment to which F’nor gently responds that “fighting thread is hard work” to which Brekke tartly observes “so is running a weyr. Dragonquest was the first Dragonriders book I ever ran across, albeit not the first I ever read since only a glance at the introduction showed thirteen year old me that the book was part of a series. In all the titles where it appears as an item, obtaining the Big Book of Beasts is purely optional and not a requirement to beat the game. Mnementh and a dragonrider request that Robinton go to F'lar, and he does so, giving a musical signal to his apprentices. MCCaffrey gather’s all her descriptive powers and plays with the concept of the million to one long shot in a truly heart rending way evoking horror and heroism in equal measure.I particularly liked how Kanth notes that as an unusually large brown dragon he could buck tradition and out fly the bronze dragons to mate with Brekke’s queen so that F’nor and Brekke could be together more permanently. When Winston the Wig-wearing Wizard casts an evil spell over their village, three intrepid explorers set off on a quest for the source of the wizard’s powers deep inside the dragon’s lair.

As the Candidates arrive, Felessan reveals to Jaxom that Brekke is amongst them; Lessa hoping she will re-Impress.

F’nor generally didn’t register in Dragonflight, mostly he was the more relaxed brother who got sent on errands, and apart from one extremely problematic section in which Lessa and F’lar laughed at him for wanting to avoid the sexually predatory Kylara we didn’t really learn much about him.

T'bor arrives to ask about providing space for injured riders from Telgar Weyr, but since Kylara is unable to help and ends up fighting with him, he goes to Brekke who is tending F'nor — Kylara knows Brekke secretly is in love with F'nor, but suspects she is sleeping with T'bor. As is gradually revealed throughout the story, the main problem is that the « Oldtimers» of the five Weyrs have not adjusted to the differences between the Ninth Pass and their own time. He also rediscovers the legendary fire-lizards from which dragons had been bred thousands of turns previously.

Taking place nearly seven Turns after the events of Dragonflight, the story opens with Masterharper Robinton preparing a ballad for the upcoming wedding of Lord Asgenar of Lemos Hold to Lady Famira, a half-sister of Lord Larad of Telgar Hold. While talking with F'nor, Brekke realises what Rannelly meant: Wirenth may be nearly ready to rise to mate, and she goes to check on her. Noting that the plan to use fire beacons and sweepriders won't work, F'lar wonders if Fandarel will be able to come up with an alternative, only for Lessa to reveal that she has already sent for him and Robinton. It is the sequel to Dragonflight, set seven years later and the second book in the Dragonriders of Pern series. While talking with T'bor, Brekke reveals that the majority of the injured dragonriders at Southern Weyr have come from Fort Weyr; the worst injured sustained their injuries as a result of trying to protect Weyrwoman Mardra as she led a wing — a break from tradition.
