About this deal

Specialising as they did in amphibious operations, the US Marines played a vital part in taking the fight directly to the enemy, as one heavily fortified and unforgiving island after another had to be flushed clean of Japanese soldiers as the Americans made their advance towards the home islands of Japan. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. This is the story of how they did just that and, in the process, forged bonds of brotherhood that still survive today. For K/3/5, or King Company, the next war was a far longer, bloodier, tougher one, with a high rate of casualties and for the men concerned more than a fair share of horror.

It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. For this work he has combed American government papers and, more importantly, accounts written by the men themselves both at the time (even though it was against regulations to keep a diary) and afterwards. From Sunday Times bestselling historian Saul David, the dramatic tale of the first American troops to take the fight to the enemy in the Second World War, and also the last. Overall I was disappointed with this book as it doesn't offer anything new about the war in the Pacific, hence only 3 stars out of 5.

Saul David's previous book SBS -Silent Warriors was in the Sunday Times Bestseller Chart in the 35th and 36th week of 2021. But David is alert to the shortcomings on the part of the righteous: an unpopular officer shows cowardice in the face of the enemy, as does an equally unpopular sergeant, raising the question of how such people ever rose to positions of authority in an elite corps in the first place.

Absolutely frightening account of how these men became embroiled in the intense fight with the Japanese military forces to reconquer all the territory lost. David has a claim to be our finest living military historian, with a string of highly acclaimed books about a range of conflicts behind him. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). They landed on the beaches of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in 1942 - the first US ground offensive of the war - and were present when Okinawa, Japan's most southerly prefecture, finally fell to American troops after a bitter struggle in June 1945.

Sledge struggled to find a publisher for his memoir when he first tried in the late 1970s: now that just about everyone is dead (though a gratifying number of the survivors lived well into their nineties), their astonishing bravery and endurance are nearly incomprehensible to a generation whose principal concern is paying their gas bills, and their recollections have a rarity value that makes them highly prized.

It is like all those films you have seen of the Pacific war; but this is a scholarly work, and the copious footnotes refer the reader to the accounts showing that these remarkable events really happened. It does not take long for the Marines to gauge the bestiality to which this equates: on Guadalcanal they come across a river awash with body parts of their slaughtered comrades, hacked to pieces for the gratification of the Japanese who have killed them. A well wrutten and sholarly work, but the seemingly endless biographical details of the participants become somewhat tiresome, and one bottle seems very much like another.

Running into a fusillade of the Marines’ machine guns is death with honour; and David recounts a succession of Japanese commanders committing hara-kiri – ritually disembowelling themselves before being beheaded – because of the defeats inflicted on them by the Americans.
