Just like tax inspector Cedric Charlton, you’ll find yourself drawn into the orbit of Pop and Ma Larkin and their six children – indomitably cheery hedonists, the lot of them. It was in this phase of his life that he found the inspiration for the Larkins series of novels -The Darling Buds of May, A Breath of French Air, When the Green Woods Laugh, etc. Bates was partial to taking long midnight walks around the Northamptonshire countryside - and this often provided the inspiration for his stories.

In the hands of a satirist the Larkins would have been deliciously lampooned - as uncouth, vulgar new-money they're an easy target. the Story of the Larkin Family: The Darling Buds of May; a Breath of French Air; when the Green Woods Laugh; Oh! The Darling Buds of May is a special book, it made me long for a hedonistic life where my only concern would be to just sit back, and enjoy. The later two titles are with previous owners ink, with one having an address stamp and the other, a squiggle mark.

Serialized in Argosy (May, June, and July 1958), in Everybody's Weekly (Six weekly parts, September 27-November 1, 1958), Daily Mail (Ten parts, Mary 13-23, 1991). The Darling Buds of May, the first of the popular Larkin family novels, was followed by A Breath of French Air (1959), When the Green Woods Laugh (1960), Oh! Thirty years after The Darling Buds of May became one of the most popular comedy-dramas in ITV history, H.Waiting for them is a young man: Mr Cedric Charlton, an upstanding inspector of taxes, come to discover why they haven't paid any. Baldwin also notes a third source for the novels: "scrap metal man who sent his sons to King's Canterbury" when Bates's sons were there. Bates was influenced by Chekhov in particular, and his knowledge of the history of the short story is obvious from the famous study he produced on the subject.
