About this deal

A South Side Chicagoan, Williams is traveling the nation to encourage students to use their resources and education to set themselves ahead of the pack and become leaders in their local communities. The music is “Stages of Awakening” by Podington Bear from the Free Music Archive and is shared under CC by NC. This podcast is for PhDs and PhDs-to-be who want to explore the hidden curriculum of finances to learn the best practices for money management, career advancement, and advocacy for yourself and others. Natilie's journey from a young girl dealing with the death of her mother to becoming a nationally recognized college speaker is nothing short of inspiring. And so those are relationships that have no biological tie, but because we say they’re family, they’re family.

This was a pivotal moment for Williams as a young, growing professional and helped her transition into her work as a traveling professional speaker. And so I was able to have even more free time to get out there and to maximize my opportunities to get in front of my target audience. Fast forward to my Masters program at Illinois State University, I did a 130-page thesis “For the Culture. While a native of the South Side of Chicago, I received a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree from Illinois State University, and did so with no student debt whatsoever. Emily: That’s a great thing actually about sort of side hustling or having your own business generally. So it’s really been like amazing and I’m so grateful, and grateful that it’s happened the same way for you. At 22 years old, she received a master’s in communication from Illinois State University, receiving both degrees without any student loan debt! And so I’m really excited to learn how she’s managing her business as well as her career as a graduate student.

Although the popular series ended in 1993, this show continues to resonate with the African-American community. Natilie: And so, I came into the department and told the Director of Grad Studies for the department, like, Hey, I do speaking.I have collected short summaries of all the answers ever given on the podcast into a document that is updated with each new episode release. And since you started the business back when you had a full-time job and another part-time job, you probably took some lessons from that in terms of time management and so forth. Try and think about what skillset do you have that you can actually monetize, and that you can do it in a way in which you’ll have time to dedicate to it. Natilie established her business prior to starting her PhD and was up front about it with the director of graduate studies from the beginning, which has been to her benefit.

Whereas you can take over the campus, what are some resources and opportunities that you should take advantage of as a college student? And I listened to one of your previous episodes where you were talking about that, where it’s frowned upon sometimes. Emily: How can the listeners find you if they want to learn more about your career or anything else? It’s allowed me to speak, but also evolve and include writing my first book on leadership and its lessons, which I hope to release in 2019. This book seeks to transform readers' outlook on the world and inspire them to take life into their own hands. Natilie: And with speaking, I was able to, there were some times where I was literally making whatever my assistantship was, I could make double that with speaking.

But for me, coming in as a graduate student, working on a PhD was really new to me because I had never done that before of course. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. I wasn’t too sure how it would go, but I knew ISU would help me because I saw the same importance put on peer mentorship that I learned in CMU. Students had an abundance of networking opportunities, listened to amazing speakers, and grew their personal and professional skills at the largest conference of the year. I don’t , I don’t think I’ve ever gotten near that degree of specificity with like my time blocking practice.

In this episode, Emily interviews Natilie Williams, a PhD candidate in communication at the University of Missouri, keynote speaker, and author. But for the most part, we definitely, as part of our program, we look for other ways to bring in that additional income.
