About this deal

I don’t know what you want me to say, it screwed screws, but the carbide bits present a bit of a problem, since they’re harder than most screws and will likely strip them if you apply too much pressure. The MUT (Military Utility Tool) is billed by Leatherman as “the first multi-tool that functions as both a tactical and practical tool for military, LE, or civilian shooters” and is packed full of functions not found in other multi-tools.

With the handles closed, and the knife blade able to open, if you look inside the opening hole, there is a small metal pin sitting back inside the handle as shown by the arrow. Undo these two screws and push the plastic bit towards the hammer (I think, I have not taken one apart in a few years. A Military Utility Tool designed for those working in Explosives Ordnance Disposal, the EOD is meant to withstand even the harshest conditions. You could use a couple of washers or something else to fill the space the knife blade occupied, so you don’t need to have the accessory kit to do this conversion (but you do need to add a spacer of some sort). The first test I always do with any bladed instrument is to see if the factory edge will slice paper on the bias and shave hair.

My experience with multi tools, be it from Victorinox, Leatherman or Gerber is that they just don’t stand up to the punishment of everyday use; they do everything poorly and are awkward to use. If you read the review entirely on Tactical Reviews, please consider one of the following to join in any discussion. It turned out to be a very easy conversion, especially as the accessory kit has a spare bronze scraper which very nicely substitutes the knife blade.

My EOD has seen use on the ski patrol, rope access jobs, tinkering at home, on climbs, working on mountain bikes, and being dropped, smashed, run over and even used as an anchor for a rappel (not a manufacturer’s recommendation). The EOD has a whole range of tools, many of which are designed for military and law enforcement use. The MUT features multiple areas on the tool threaded for cleaning rods and brushes and all the screwdriver bits are sized for standard military and civilian sighting adjustment work.

The Leatherman MUT is excessive in so many ways, and due to that, probably shouldn’t be your first multitool. This heavy duty multi-tool would make a great gift for someone who shoots or spends plenty of time outdoors. The MUT feels like a tool looking for a problem, because most people who use one won’t need to use things like the bolt override tool, or use the socket for cleaning rods.Compared to the earlier photo of the MUT when it was on its own in the holster, the flap now sits higher up on the pouch front, but remains perfectly secure. The knife, saw, firearm disassembly punch, cleaning rod adaptor and replaceable bronze carbon scraper are all easily accessed (single handed) from within handles when the MUT is folded. The MUT’s tool repertoire is downright exhaustive, with a claimed 16 tools, and the possibility for further expansion with aftermarket accessory kits. The thread-lock used makes the turning motion very sticky, but the screw certainly won’t fall out on its own. Not available for destinations in the Highlands and Islands, Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, Guernsey and Jersey, Isle of Scilly and mid Wales.
