About this deal

My Patrons: Alfred, Andrew, Annabeth, Ben, Blaise, Diana, Dylan, Edward, Element, Ellen, Gary, Hamad, Helen, Hunter, Jimmy Nutts, Jennifer, Joie, Luis, Lufi, Melinda, Meryl, Mike, Miracle, Neeraja, Nicholas, ReignBro, Samuel, Sarah, Sarah, Shaad, Xero, Wendy, Wick, Zoe. To help Anden out in Espenia, Hilo decides to give the Espenian gangsters access to Jade if they stay out of the way of the Kekonese-Espenians. I read Jade City over two years ago and while I enjoyed it, since the reason wasn't released yet, I just never read it.

If I am not mistaken, this might be the first book that I have read from that wrote time skips so casually and flawlessly.

Jade City was predominantly about the Clan War but this time there is also a war of nations, involving many countries such as Kekon, Espenia, Ygutan and Oortokon. Every single one of these characters is convincingly portrayed, through their thoughts, emotions and actions. Anden is being sent to Espenia to learn and be an exchange student in the hopes of making him useful to the clan in the future considering he does not want to wear Jade whatsoever. Fonda Lee is a black belt martial artist, a former corporate strategist, and action movie aficionado. Hilo, current Pillar and former Horn to No Peak, is charismatic, loving to his family, and the most ruthless member all at once.

This information was of course leaked by the Mountain clan to get Shae’s reputation and integrity to be questioned. I also enjoyed the direction that Anden (the adopted brother) went with his character arc in a different country. It takes the foundation that made the first book so great, and doesn't need the slow character development the first book needed to get right into the flow of this story. The intriguing narrative is written in a way that shows perspectives of the social ladder from the bottom to the top, and everything in between. Best of all, there are more than a few scenes that make you hold your breath, moments that could change the game for some of the players. This book broadens in scale and scope, but loses nothing of the wonderful characterisation and sense of place that was so strong in the first book. I’m gratified and impressed by the gangster fantasy series I’ve read this year; Priest of Lies by Peter McLean is included in one of my favorite reads of the year so far, and now Jade War joins the list as well.
