About this deal

I realise that even the briefest of historical moments can be long and winding when written about, and I appreciated all the precursory info about McLaren and Sex, and the most enjoyable for me was middle of the book, the section about the Pistols forming and gathering momentum; punk gathering momentum. The contents include: fanzines, posters, flyers, graphic designs, original letters and documents, photographs, notebooks and much more. They really are a band not to be missed so come check them out at a gig near you or if you want to book some absolutely amazing live entertainment for your pub, party or private event, get in contact. He probably just missed his train or something, but everyone at school thought he’d been killed, you know… because he’d foolishly gone to a “punk rock concert”.

Dust Jackets are not guaranteed and when still present, they will have various degrees of tear and damage. Este mastodontico libro no sólo analiza el auge y caida de los Pistols sino también el movimiento punk en general: su contexto político, estético y musical y como cambio la música un movimiento marginal surgido en Londres. JD: Thankfully, I don’t hear an axe grinding when I read this book (like I do when reading some books about music). Full of anedcote, insight, and exclusive interviews, it tells the sensational story of the meteoric rise and rapid decline of the last great rock'n'roll band and the cultural moment they came to define. We will make you care about this, they were saying, and if the only way to do it is to make you suffer, then so be it. One of our most popular TV shows is a reality programme in which you watch other people watching TV.

How anger, individualism, nihilism, and elements of feigned extremism, fused with creative genius expressed in music and dress code was the story of adolescent youth and culture during this socially turbulent period. This must have been quite a task given the plethora of material but the complete, and in some cases deliberate camouflaging of events and reasons, that could have led to either some kind of hero worshipful bible-like book or to the usual skim, have generally been avoided. When William I had his coronation at Westminster Abbey in 1066, his soldiers mistook the acclamation for a riot, and immediately set about burning and looting half the city. I don’t really remember what it’s like to be a 17-year-old, but I think if I were to read it now, at that age, I’d be enthralled and thrilled by it.

Hundreds of men in deeply silly outfits marched slowly, incredibly slowly, down a totally unremarkable country road. It goes deep into the calculated approach of Malcolm McLaren, political push back of the Thatcher era conservativism, the ineptitude of the music industry, and the incompetence of the punks themselves. McLaren's life is covered in minute detail, and a good deal of the book deals explicitly with the history of far-left extremist political groups in the UK, Germany, and France.

England's Dreaming is the ultimate book on punk, its progenitors, the Sex Pistols, and the moment they defined for music fans in England and the United States.Sections of the Path can be quick tricky, especially in the wet and the paths to the beach blocks tend to move around over time. I remember in May 1997, the morning after the Labour landslide, when I was allowed to stay up most of the night, going to an Asda somewhere on the M27 and moping around the aisles thinking: “Nothing here is going to change. The obvious one is that you read about the Pistols and that leads you to the Situationists, and then this whole other world opens up. Jeremy Deller: It’s not often that you remember reading a book, but I distinctly remember reading England’s Dreaming. It's taken me a while to get through this, not because the book was dull or hard work, but because of the sheer volume of information inside, covering a relatively short time span.

It should also be remembered for its challenge to existing convention and protocol, and it's undoubted contribution to the life of music. I was unemployed, maybe a little bit like you, and I would get up in the morning, pretend that I had a day ahead of me and then go back to bed and read the book while my parents, downstairs, were trying to work out what it was that I was actually doing with my life. Which is just silly, really, because if you have something to say, then surely you’d want to say it to as many people as possible.

Jon Savage, geboren 1953, studierte in Cambridge und ist Schriftsteller, Rundfunkautor und Musikjournalist. The book was almost telling you: you are right to be interested in pop culture to this obsessive degree. A pop-culture classic full of anecdote, insight and exclusive interviews, England's Dreaming tells the sensational story of the meteoric rise and rapid decline of the last great rock 'n' roll band and the cultural moment they came to define.
