About this deal

Osprey Games OSP8935 Escape from Colditz 75th Anniversary Edition Game for 14 years to 18 years,Multicolor,11. At times it could be tedious, at times a hoot and, when those attempts to escape went down, some genuine tension and excitement was always generated, with all the POW players rooting for you, especially if it was one of those rarely successful, last gasp plays of a Do or Die card and the desperate die-rolling. Opportunity Cards and Security Cards are incredibly useful, an Opportunity Card might provide a POW with a piece of equipment, or allow them to hide from the Security Officer at some point, it may even allow them access to a tunnel, which will aid their escape attempt. The game board, covered with a grid of linked circles, is a pictorial plan of Colditz Castle showing the inner and outer courtyards, various rooms, safe areas, cells, and barracks.

Could a POW move to a tunnel with this card, move through the tunnel to the outer area, cut a fence and continue moving? This edition, published to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Pat Reid’s escape, will feature completely new art-work painted by fan-favourite historical artist, Peter Dennis. The fastest time we’ve ever played it in is an hour, and that’s because we set ourselves a time limit. The logic of this seems slightly odd, as the major part of the game used to be spent in gathering the requisite four items [food, documents, disguise and a compass] to create an Escape Kit, as well as items such as wire cutters, rope, keys and passes to use on your route out of the castle. The Escape Kit consists of Civilian Disguises, Magnetic Compass, Food, false documents, maps, and money (Reichmarks).

The Colditz Game Board is based on a true plan of Colditz Castle, but adapted to provide all the necessary rooms on one level. It consists of the Inner PoW Courtyard, coloured grey, and the outer Garrison Courtyard known as the Kommandantur.Should any POW end the turn in one of these spaces they are immediately sent to solitary, so avoiding them is obviously a case of hoping you’ll roll well. The great news about the whole thing is that they included all the old classic rules and cards so if you just want a trip down memory lane you’ve got that right here too. As briefly commented on, you can be wholly nostalgic and simply play using the very same rules that I experienced for the first time back in the late 70s, a few years after its first publication. Escape from Colditz is a board game produced by Gibsons Games of London in 1973 that simulates attempted escapes by Allied prisoners-of-war (POWs) from Oflag IV-C (better known as Colditz Castle) during World War II.

A time limit is agreed to by all players, as well as the number of successful escapes required for victory. The player takes on the role of a prison Escape Officer trying to facilitate the escape of his men beyond the prison walls or of the German Security officer trying to thwart those attempts. If you haven’t guessed it already, I recommend Escape from Colditz as an immensely satisfying and immersive experience.Originally, the winner was the player who first made two successful escapes and failing this being achieved in the time agreed by the players the winner was the player taking the role of the German Security Officer. There’s also fences where wire cutters will make a handy-dandy exit, presumably in a humorous human shape. The typical larger, shallower box, easily prone to damage, has given way to a much more sturdy package. An Escaper is deemed to have succeeded and to be 'gone away' when he reaches, safely, one of the targets outside the perimeters of the Castle as marked on the board. Whenever you move through a window or use wire-cutters and escape token will be placed there which allows any of your pawns to use those escapes without needing to spend the corresponding equipment type.
