About this deal

This is the twelfth book I’ve completed from my 20 Books project (and I’m currently reading Book 13) and once again also comes off my TBR 2021-2022 total. It’s just a great written book because I really did feel for Cynthia when she discovers it’s Isaac’s brother is who killed Mike. This is a brilliant read and it leaves you both wanting a sequel and realising not every story has a happy end. For a course on Canadian Literature I managed to get Richard Wagamese’s novel Indian Horse, a semi-autobiographical account of life in a Catholic residential school for indigenous peoples. The biggest culture shock is her transition to private school, where she finds herself torn between head boy Thomas, who is white, and his adopted brother Isaac, who is Black.

At her new school, Cynthia immediately finds herself caught between two brothers - head boy Thomas, who is white, and his adopted Black brother, Isaac. Your openness about your own experiences, but also your insight and exploration of WHY is wise and needed. Your post reminded me to put ‘get a library card from my new city’ on my things-to-do list for tomorrow. I’m getting on fairly well, yes, thank you, though whether I’ll finish it by the end of the month is slightly doubtful! I loved the grace Candice gave both parents and how she handled the cultural differences that have a funny way of playing out when a family is dealing with stronger forces than they are used to.Sometimes the novels chosen are new, often they are from the backlist and occasionally re-issued from way back. We use Google Analytics to see what pages are most visited, and where in the world visitors are visiting from. But to keep ourselves on our toes, we have a rule that author gender is alternated, girl-boy-girl-boy, and the continents always rotated (with occasional glitches).

Cuts Both Ways is an engaging coming of age story following the life of Cynthia as she finds herself relocated to suburbia and thrust into the elite world of private school.I have decided to stop saying that I don’t like reading YA because this is the second one I have really enjoyed in as many months. When Cynthia discovers a shocking secret about one of the brothers her whole new life begins to unfold once again. It was eye opening and a must read for anyone who wants a hard dose of reality mixed with the kind of storytelling that draws you in so much so that you don’t want it to end, as painful as it can sometimes be. Keeping in mind that this is aimed at YA, I thought it subtly but clearly got across some important messages for all young people (and particularly young girls) about self-respect, consent, safety, being true to oneself and issues surrounding race and class stereotypes.

The twists aren't exactly twists, but that's not the point; the point is how the characters react to them, not we humble readers. However, it can be extremely disheartening when you spent ages coming up with a creative post only for the algorithm to push it down so nobody sees it. The title to be read and discussed is sign-posted and on sale for the whole of the previous month (with a discount for those who make it known they intend to come) and everybody is welcome, whether first-timer, part-timer or regular-timer.A book that might interest you on this theme is Second Class Citizen by Buchi Emecheta, a semi-autobiographical novel recently republished by her son. She has recently experienced the traumatic and tragic loss of her brother, and the story somewhat centres around the family as they learn to navigate around their immense grief and missing family member. Depending on how much time he had, he would recite lyrics about how the size of your offering would reflect the size of your blessing, and if you really wanted that new house or for your child to get into that university, or for the good Lord to zap that cancer out of you, then you sure as hell better put your money where your prayer was.
