So as you can expect the excitement was at boiling point as we headed to Venue Cymru for the first Panto in two years, it was a strange experience in the theatre, as we all have to adhere to the rules of facemasks wearing, but this certainly didn’t deter the people from taking some time out and enjoying the festive season as the theatre was almost sold out with families taking to the theatre to lift their spirits after what has been a terrible couple of years.

The most magical of pantomime characters, the fairy role, is glossed over sometimes. It’s a part Julian Clary usually makes his own in his appearances in panto. Often named Fairy ‘Something’ or Spirit of the ‘Something’, the fairy role is responsible for making sure everything goes to plan for the principal boy and girl (spoiler alert: it usually doesn’t!)

Traditionally the hero of the story (although modern day shows often have the Principal Girl share this distinction) the Principal Boy is also usually played by a young woman – just to make things more complicated. One of my favourite sketches is where the fairy tries to teach the comic how to sing a romantic song or delivery a romantic rhyme but whenever the comic tries, he always ends up creating a rhyme with a rude word!
