I suggested that we were going to do something that’s kind of like a Disney take on jazz, based around the Aristocats. And suddenly everything we did started to sell.” May have letter "A" stamped/embossed around spindle hole on both sides, similar to The Cure - Japanese Whispers The best thing about the Japanese pressing is the lyric sheet insert. The label seems to have had some poor soul transcribe it from scratch. Hilarity ensues. It's at least 50% accurate and 85% complete. The remaining 15% is just lines of frustrated question marks. But the parts that they got wrong are worth the price of admission. Offiziellecharts.de – The Cure – Japanese Whispers: The Cure Singles Nov 82: Nov 83" (in German). GfK Entertainment Charts. So then I a/b'd the 4 Walk EP songs on the WG CD with the UK Fiction Walk 12", and the differences between those were even more glaring... Compared to the original vinyl, the WG CD sounded like a 3rd generation cassette recording. Really cheap, murky, and harsh, with a very noticeable cut in the lower frequencies. The EP, by contrast, had a beautifully full low end and that rich detail in the higher frequencies. After the band had imploded (and dropped down to only two permanent members) from their increasingly depressing albums Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography, upbeat pop songs like “Let’s Go To Bed”, “The Walk” and “The Lovecats” reinvented the band from gloomy doomsters to pop sensations seemingly overnight.

Japanese Whispers is a compilation of Cure singles and B-sides that were released between November 1982 and November 1983. The compilation includes popular hits such as “Let’s Go To Bed ”, “The Walk ” and “The Lovecats ” that made the band become the household names they are today. This new direction would earn the band their first two top 20 hits in both the UK and Ireland. Japanese Whispers would also be the band’s first album to chart in the US. Sire Records Company, 3 East 54th Street, New York, New York 10022. Marketed by WEA Records & Tape Distributors Pty Limited. A Warner Communications Company Let's Go to Bed sounded fine enough, but when the Dream came on, something sounded really off. I got out my Sire LP to a/b the two versions, and sure enough, the Dream on the WG CD - as well as the other three songs culled from the Walk EP - sounded muffled and muddy compared to the Sire LP. The best way I can describe it is that the Sire LP (while not a stellar pressing) had this airiness and very pleasing definition/detail in the higher frequencies, whereas the WG CD sounded as if that high frequency had been crudely switched off. The Cure’s third compilation album Japanese Whispers will be released as a picture disc for the first time and be available on March 26.Japanese Whispers is a mini-album that collects previously-released songs on various singles from November 1982 to November 1983. Use italics (lyric) and bold (lyric) to distinguish between different vocalists in the same song part The following year, two additional (and even more successful, as it turned out) poppy singles were made available to the public - a grateful public, it seemed, with ‘The Walk’ reaching #12, and ‘The Lovecats’ faring even better, hitting an impressive #7 position in 1983 on the reformed-goths home turf. The singles marked a change of direction in The Cure’s sound, so it’s convenient then, that fans were offered an opportunity to collect the aforementioned singles (and their respective b-sides) in one, neat bundle entitled ‘Japanese Whispers’, to investigate this unassumingly important chapter in the bands eclectic catalogue. JesusChris - Fair enough, i get what you mean - this record has sentimental value to you, so that's why you're so fond, i dig. P.S. Your mum has good taste in music! Smith told Rolling Stone with a laugh that after spending time recovering at his parents' house after touring in support Pornography, he ‘decided to be a pop star’: First charted in the UK Album charts on December 24th 1983, highest position was number 26, reached on January 21st 1984.Robert Smith explained what inspired the significant change in the band’s sound from the ‘completely unlistenable’ Pornography to the quirky pop singles found on Japanese Whispers: Vote up content that is on-topic, within the rules/guidelines, and will likely stay relevant long-term. The song peaked at #12 in the UK, becoming their biggest hit at the time. It would soon be surpassed by their first top 10 “The Lovecats” just a few months later. Also of possible interest, I a/b'd the WG JW Let's Go to Bed with the original Fiction 7", and the 7" absolutely killed; again much fuller low end with richly detailed upper frequencies.

In a 2004 interview with Rolling Stone, Smith detailed what contributed to the shift in style. “I didn’t want that side of life anymore; I wanted to do something that’s really kind of cheerful. I thought, “This isn’t going to work. No one’s ever gonna buy into this. It’s so ludicrous that I’m gonna go from a goth idol to a pop star in three easy lessons. The songs from the Let's Go to Bed and Lovecats singles on the WG CD pressing sounded more or less identical to the Sire LP, interestingly enough. But those Walk songs sound awful, which is disappointing, especially since for me, The Walk EP is probably my very favorite Cure release, and I kind of wanted to have those songs on CD. The songs were recorded when the band was in a transitional phase. In 1982, bassist Simon Gallup left following the Pornography tour and musician Lol Tolhurst switched from drums to the keyboards.
