About this deal

The program started in 1984 with an already established (1918) 6 -8 page newspaper and 19 students; it has become the largest media program in the nation with 600+ students and a new 25,000 sq. However, this book is principle based (Trust, respect, independence, collaboration, and kindness) and are all principles I agree with. If I didn't find the writing style so grating I probably would have given this 2-stars but I couldn't look past it. Her father’s example, that of a distant and authoritarian figure, was something that she definitely wanted to avoid. Naturally after a short period her daughter came to her senses and ended up going on to found ancestry company 23andMe.

Furthermore, the values (trust, respect, independence, collaboration, kindness) are the vague ones of seemingly all corporations and for-profit enterprises. When she needed them to eat their fruits and veggies, rather than simply telling them to do so she would give them a choice between the two and let them pick, thus helping to teach them that they had the power to make their own choices, while still being a responsible parent. Esther Wojcicki shares her views on parenting and educating (she's also a high school teacher) in this highly readable book. How we raise and educate our children determines not only the people they become but the society we create. Her perspective is a drastic opposite to the popular ‘helicopter’ style of parenting we see nowadays. A leader in blended learning and the integration of technology into education, she is the founder of the Media Arts programs at Palo Alto High School.

I totally agree with that-your kids aren’t you, so stop trying to mold them into the person you wish you were; let them be their own person, free of your own insecurities. Asking them to participate in deceit seems to send a crummy message, in my opinion, and it's one of the opportunities that she used to brag about herself, not just her kids.

At our worst, we are the indifferent hospice staff; at our best, we are Anne and her heartfelt commitment to her grandmother. Esther Wojcicki seems like a nice enough lady, and she should rightly be proud of her three daughters' success, but this was a slog from beginning to end. I wasn't expecting the chapter on divorce but I agree whole heartedly with it as a child of divorced parents. When they feel they can’t tell you their dreams, or what life choices they make, they’ll stop trusting you. I always mean to read parenting books but then when it comes down to it they are not as much fun as novels or other nonfiction!
