About this deal

Different manufacters seem to have different 5th wheel heights. Unless drivers are dropping them intentionally like this.

a) Before using on a road a vehicle or vehicles to which this paragraph applies, the owner shall give notice of the intended use to the Chief Officer of Police for any area in which he proposes to use the vehicle or vehicles. The notice shall be given so that it is received by the date after which there are at least two working days before the date on which the use of the vehicle or vehicles is to begin, and shall include the following details— v) in a case to which regulation 82(7) and (8) applies, the overall length of the vehicle and the length of any forward or rearward projection of the load or special appliance or apparatus. The table below is a summary of the requirements applicable to loads overhanging the sides of a vehicle as set out in regulation 82 of C&U. Load projection or overall width Must admit I considered the approach of using trig from the comfort of the cab, but you'd have to be able to see the peak of the uneven load from two adjacent sides (peaks occurring toward the middle of the container and which only modestly exceed the height of the container, may not be visible on two adjacent sides at any reasonable distance), the peak would have to be occluded by the container at not-too-close an angle (i.e. if the peak is near to the edge of the container and clearly exceeds the height of the container even at close range, so that it is only occluded at an angle close to 90 degrees, then it would have to be measured directly to avoid an excessive margin of error), and you'd have to take all observations on a completely level area (because you have no tools capable of correcting for uneven ground), and the top of the container itself would still have to measured and would have to be completely level around its perimeter relative to the ground (or be measured at all the points where it coincides with the lines of observation).

HGV height indicators

The right angle fold out arm at the top enables drivers to accurately measure vehicles, loads or an obstruction ahead. Measurements are shown in both imperial and metric.

I've found that 9 times out of 10 if it says 14' 6'' it is really around 14' 3''...but don't take that as gospel.Regulation 100 (2) of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 (as amended), requires all vehicles to not be used or loaded in such a way that they endanger either those using the vehicle or other road users. Further information on the safety of loads can be found in DfT’s information sheet on the Safety of loads. 7. Legal information

Some people in the industry might possibly believe you have produced a good video for the LGV world, but from my stand-point it needs more detail. Something as thorough as the Fawcett/Long video would be more impressive. Racing boats propelled by oars, and certain other vehicles have slightly different requirements. For details consult regulation 82 of C&U. 2. Loads overhanging the side of the vehicle Any HGV driver or operator would agree that bridge strikes by vehicles should be avoided for a number of reasons. Bridge strikes are costly, dangerous and not to mention inconvenient for other road users. i) any person employed in pursuance of section 34 of the 1972 Act in attending that vehicle or any such trailer shall be treated as being an attendant required by this paragraph so long as he is also employed to discharge the duties mentioned in this paragraph; and

Are you HGV height aware?

ii) a prescribed marker is a marker of the size, shape and colour described in Part II of this schedule. Network Rail research shows that 43% of lorry drivers admit to not measuring their vehicle before heading out on the road. Reporting in-service defects For the purposes of this subparagraph the expression “the vehicle” shall not include any special appliance or apparatus or any part thereof which is a forward projection or a rearward projection within the meaning of regulation 81;
