About this deal

Clematis viticella ‘Purpurea Plena Elegans’ AGM is a favorite in cottage gardens; in fact, this is the oldest garden clematis, cultivated in France over 200 years ago. This traditional blue and white passion flower is one of the easiest to grow and it will produce flowers from early spring until late into the year. Orange egg-shaped fruits follow, although they are not very pleasant to eat. Temperatures need to go lower than -10C for this vigorous climber. It's easy to get to grips with how to grow clematis. Grow in well-drained, fertile soil in sun or semi-shade, as container gardening ideas, and always with the roots shaded by other plants. You can prune clematis of this kind lightly to keep it in shape. This is a beautiful cultivar but there are many choices for best clematis to grow. West walls generally avoid spring frosts and severe summer heat, now more prevalent than ever due to climate change, so they can be very kind. They also tend to benefit from prevailing rainfall in most areas of the country. Passiflora caerulea - blue passion flower

South-facing walls take the full force of the sun and heat in summer and they offer shelter in winter. Mediterranean and Asian plants, used to a hotter summer climate, can do well here. Vitis vinifera ‘Purpurea’ - grape vine Wooden arches tend to be more suited to traditional settings, and their natural timber construction blends in well. The timber is usually pressure treated to protect against rot and is light green or tan in appearance. Annual climbers, which typically last just one growing season in the British climate, are usually grown from seed and are great for a short but dazzling show over the summer. They are also great for being more romantic with your partner for Valentine’s Day. For best results, plant a bare root rose during late autumn or winter, but not on dry or frozen ground. Want to know something even better? Passion flowers can live through British winters too! Unique selling point! 8 Roses

Solanum crispum ‘Glasnevin’ AGM – this Chilean potato tree is a climbing shrub that produces fragrant blue-purple flowers in summer and early fall, followed by inedible yellow fruit. Jasminum nudiflorum, known as winter jasmine, produces its deliciously fragrant yellow blooms in the depths of winter, before its dark green leaves appear in spring. Its stems do not twine like other clematis, so it will need support such as a trellis on walls or fences, where it can reach up to 3m high and wide. Handily, it is happy growing in full sun or partial shade. BUY NOW Spring is often about looking down as snowdrops, daffodils and crocus burst up through the ground to herald the arrival of warmer weather. But spring flowering climbers can bring real beauty to your outside space. Raise your sights with some of these spring stunners: Roses are indispensable in the garden for looks and scent, and there are a huge range of super fragrant climbing types to choose from, like dark pink Rosa ‘Gertrude Jekyll’, or pale pink ‘The Generous Gardener’, both of which will repeat flower through summer if deadheaded. Climbers can be pruned in late winter. BUY NOW For a more permanent display, train a fruit tree against a vertical support into a cordon, espalier or fan to provide architectural interest in winter, blossom in spring and fruits in autumn. How to care for climbing plants Create a beautifully shaded sanctuary. The bright starry, non-fragrant flowers begin to appear in November, so this could be grown on an arch near a winter or spring woodland garden. The new growth is shiny olive-green, so winter jasmine can look wonderful in winter light. It doesn’t twine, but this will form a shrub in times and then it’s possible to tie it to an arch if you plant one on each side.

Vertical growing isn’t restricted to ornamental plants – many edible crops can be grown against a fence or up an arch. Courgettes and squash can be grown this way. My favourite squash to grow over a sunny arch is the long, sweet and extremely prolific tromboncino. Trachelospermum jasminoides AGM is a superb evergreen climber with glossy green leaves that take on crimson hues in winter and jasmine-like ivory summer flowers that have a strong tea scent – making it one of the best flowering climbers. You will need to know how to prune wisteria too. It's a vigorous climber that can grow up to 30 feet tall so will need a sturdy structure that will be able to support the weight of the mature plant. It will also need ruthless pruning to contain the size and shape of the plant as it grows on your arch, and this will also promote more prolific flowering. Wooden arbours tend to be more enclosed and are therefore more suited to the variable British weather.

Alternatively, train Jasminum nudiflorum along a trellis or fence where its yellow star flowers will brighten up even the darkest corner. Edible climbers Apple trees are trained on arches to form a walkway in this English country garden

They grow fast, making them a great candidate for your garden arch, although they should be regularly pruned for dead flower heads and seed pods. 10 Wisteria In their most basic form arbours are simply metal or wooden archways but with a fixed seat under the arch.

These wide garden arches can easily span that gap

It’s vital to support the plant with the right structure and ramblers and scramblers need to be pruned, otherwise most will overwhelm a pergola, arch or trellis. Pruning in the correct way will also increase flower power. Not sure what climbing plants to choose? Here are Nic’s favourite plants to give you all year round interest... Climbing plants for spring beauty Beautiful wisteria flowers elegantly shade this sunny corner Plants on pergolas need to have pliable stems and some of the best, for example wisteria, have pendent flowers that cascade downwards creating a waterfall effect. It’s important to choose the right plant, one that will thrive in the conditions whether it be bright sunshine or dappled shade. Height and vigour also play their part.
