The food and drink consumed during fika are not as important as the social aspect of the ritual. People will often make something at home to share with others. Interestingly, fika is often enjoyed by candlelight, even in office buildings. Candlelight improves the atmosphere, and people are discouraged from using smartphones. All these considerations make fika a relaxing event. Dutch Tienuurtje is for Children

I am a big fan of cakes, scones, and biscuits. If I could eat those every day around eleven, I probably wouldn’t need dinner until 3:00 p.m. The sugar would provide a temporary energy boost to help me make it through the sleepy part of the afternoon. I always thought that dinner and supper were the same thing. In the southern United States, we call it supper, but up north, they call it dinner. I’m surprised to learn that in the UK, they are two different things! You're not having a biscuit for Elevenses, you're having a biscuit for Tea. But I don't mean tea. I mean, when we say, "What are you having for Tea?" we mean that time between lunch and dinner. I know it's insane. But at Tea time, we will have tea and biscuits that we dunk into tea. Sir: I love elevenses. I could write an essay on elevenses, having grown up in Devon. Having elevenses was a daily gathering of joy and gossip in our home. Workers who are happy and not distracted by hunger are more efficient. If you feel like your whole office might benefit from this ritual, let your human resource officer know about it.

As coffee becomes more popular around the world, some people have started drinking it instead of tea. The options for food and drink during elevenses are endless. The purpose of this break, after all, is to stem any hunger before lunch and to get enough energy to make it to lunch. Similar Traditions Around the World I live in the US now and had friends over the other day for toasted teacakes by the fire. American guests peppered me with questions about whether people in England actually do stop for tea. My relations tell me no – not unless you have people over. Bummer! Feel free to drop us a line with your thoughts. Many people have heard of the British tradition of afternoon or high tea. This is an afternoon break with tea, sandwiches, and scones to help with hunger before a late dinner. Elevenses are a similar tradition, except that they happen in the late morning.

And my fellow BMers have come put with 31 amazing elevenses recipes. Some of the recipes are traditional English elevenses recipes and some are just perfect to serve during 11am. Elevenses, like afternoon tea, is a little detour in the day, a break from toil. The word, or something similar to it, appears in the OED as a bit of Suffolk dialect from 1849. It also gives them a chance to socialize with colleagues and build work relationships. Elevenses Are Not an Old Tradition Azuza - I've heard of a similar theory regarding eating several smaller meals throughout the day in place of three large ones. While some people may follow that to the letter, it's still important to watch the types of foods that are consumed. Several small meals of useless carbs and junk aren't much healthier. When I was growing up my Dad used to love elevenses. It was an important custom to him. At 11am, during the holidays, we stopped whatever we were doing and with great joy he would set out a little treat for my brother and me.

Recipes are divided into 3 categories; drinks, savory and sweet elevenses recipes. 5 Drink Refreshments Rise in coffee shops and coffee drinking in general, leading to coffee as an any-time-of-day, on-the-go break. Margaret Thatcher did away with the 11am ⅓ pint of warm milk in schools that had conditioned all of us to take a break and our stomachs to expect a little something. Even today, though he is nearly 80 and lives an ascetic lifestyle on a meditation retreat near Oxford, he still loves stuffing his face with biscuits at 11, or, more likely, ten to.
