Not just the insane parties, but the studio lots that had multiple films shooting at wild paces just feet from each other. I didn’t completely connect with it, but I’m more than willing to check it out again down the line to see if the second or third time is the charm. The 1998 version of the series’ original pilot film, The Gathering, has also been included, though it’s unremastered and so in 16x9 (as the original film elements were lost during the Northridge earthquake in 1994). Please Note: Paramount Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray I reviewed in this Post. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Babylon’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2. and uses a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG), High Dynamic Range and Dolby Vision, and is encoded using the HEVC (H. And the other big catalog news today is that Universal has finally officially announced the long-expected 4K release of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing on 2/2. Overall, ‘Babylon’ is an intriguing look at one of the most outrageous times in Hollywood and showcases the final days of the silent film era and the beginning of talkies overtaking the industry that never shies away from the graphic, sex and drug-fueled insanity and debauchery that accompanied it.

Babylon arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from Paramount with a three-disc 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital set. And of course, I don’t think a Damien Chazelle movie would be complete with kick ass jazz music to carry us through it. Likewise the Dolby Atmos track exemplifies nearly everything we’ve come to expect from modern soundtracks. As fates would have it, and due to another young actress’s unfortunate demise, she is plucked from the crowd of the party to be on set the next morning. She’s convinced that she’s destined to be a star in spite of the fact that she’s got no actual credits to her name. Overall, this is a magnificent Ultra High Definition video presentation that should have fans and newcomers alike thoroughly impressed. There are a couple of short accompanying snapshots on costumes and sound, and a salvo of Deleted Scenes to round out the package.

Heroes, thieves, and rare and exotic beings find refuge in this time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war on a lone space station - the last and best hope for peace between a hundred worlds, alien and human alike - Babylon 5. After scoring his Best Director Oscar for La La Land, no one can fault Damien Chazelle for chasing some exciting projects. The fine folks over at Paramount Home Entertainment have shoved all their chips into the center of the table with their 3-disc, 4K Ultra-HD + Blu-ray + Digital Code Steelbook Edition of Babylon. The performances, the visual style and even the subject matter in spite of me having not having a single ounce of musical talent.

Extras will include a new introduction by the director and over four hours of legacy features, among them a documentary, deleted and extended scenes, trailers, and audio commentary by Lee. The film will also be available in a standard 4K UHD release (although no Blu-ray copy of the film is included). As I wait to regain the fortitude to watch this film again, I hope to hear Chazelle’s next film is on the horizon soon. The result is unwieldy, unpleasant, but still something of a blistering experience - undoubtedly quite the spectacle on the Big Screen (if you can survive those opening few minutes, that is) - and capable of moments of impressively constructed resonance across its duration. This is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, set at the end of the Silent Era, only without Tarantino's sense of fun, or Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, lensed through unflinchingly adult eyes, more than prepared to depict orgies in all their debauched 'glory' rather than pretend all rich people want to do is sip champagne.
