She is Alice's best friend and is devastated when she learns that Alice is moving away to Scotland, having seen each other nearly every day since the cradle.

During Gemma's visit to Scotland, Flora is disdainful of Gemma's childish ways and tries to get Alice to do what she wants to do. In the story, Alice and her family move away to Scotland and both Gemma and Alice are desperate to remain best friends. A heart-warming book about losing your best friend, this shows you how Gemma feels when Alice appeared to pal up with Flora who Gemma hates. The only reason I gave this book four stars is because I feel like the book is very short for my age and it only took me two days to read; if I was Jacqueline I would probably take at least 100 pages simply talking about all the important events they've had with each other. As well as winning many awards for her books, including the Children’s Book of the Year, Jacqueline is a former Children’s Laureate, and in 2008 she was appointed a Dame.

The girls are about to be separated as one family is moving, so they first decide to run away then create havoc when that is stopped. However, Gemma grows insecure when Alice is excited to show off her new pink bedroom and large house. This book "best friends" is a delightful and fun story full of new complications at every turn of a page.
